Shipping engine/tranny from Italy

Post by kinkyllama »

I found a decently priced c20let and F28 in Italy and the guy is willing to ship to the US.
The price without shipping is a bit under $1,800usd and the engine/tranny has 60k km on it... which is the reason im jumping on it, other than this one I havnt seen anything under 100k km. He said I should look over the intercooler and any piping/tubes to insure its in perfect condition but he said other than that the engine/trannys in great shape.

I need to know who you guys recommend for shipping and how much you think it'll be. Also, the part of my most concern, how will I get it all through customs? What do I need?

I have access to a loading ramp and forklifts so that may save me on shipping a little.

Any help asap is greatly appreciated... time is very limited.

Nice buy, but shipping's gonna be painful. I was fully expecting to import one from Germany...

Does UPS or DHL ship engines from Italy to the US? He says the cost is $240-$360 depending on my address, does this sound right? I wanna use an approved escrow service provided by ebay themself to protect me.

He said he wants to use either of those two

Oh btw, this is on ebay, but theres still 36 hours left

:smt030 you must be drunk telling people it's on EBAY for that cheap :smt030

I don't know about those prices..... it seems low.... it cost's more than that to ship an engine from Montana to Florida.

I have to wonder if DHL or UPS will take something that heavy.

I just went onto Italy's Fedex site and got rates for shipping to the USA.... 70kg will cost you 849.60 EURO (max weight = 70kg )

Given this won't even cover the tranny .... FedEx is out.

Ok.... now on the italy UPS site.... max weight is 70kg.... 616.10 EURO for 70kg from Rome Italy to Phoenix

So at 70kg max weight.... UPS is out too

I'm pretty sure DHL would be close to Fedex and DHL...... to get freight cheap it would probably have to go via sea freight through a freight forwarder.

I'd guess it will be in the range of $500 USD to $750 USD and it will take a month to get here.

Your best bet is to fly to Italy and bring the engine back as your "carry on"

The EPA are complete jerks..... if the engine isn't spotless (no dirt or oil) your shipment will sit in customs for weeks.... then they will charge you an arm and a leg for cleaning off the engine (and you just have to hope they don't damage it)

I dunno..... I'm planning on bringing some cars and engine from the UK eventually.... but I will fly over there to inspect everything and make sure that it won't have a problem getting into Canada.

I dont really mind if it takes a month to get here... im in no hurry for the engine and can wait a month for the tranny.

$500bux still isnt bad though for shipping. Hell, 2300 for the whole thing, shipped isnt bad.

Do you know what kinda processing and customs fees I should expect?

Honestly..... if you want a C20LET that bad.... you should consider bringing in the parts separately and have someone build up an engine for you.

If it's the 6spd your after.... there are other options available depending on how much you want to spend (kits to convert your D20 to a 6spd)

I have a contact in the UK that sells race prepared transmissions.... they shotpeen and polish the gearset, debur and polish the case, install a Quaife LSD, convert it to FWD and reassemble it with precision tollerances (blueprinted)

There is also a possibility of using a Saab 6spd tranny.... I've been unable to get a good look at one to see if the F40 is compatible in any way with our engines.

Some of the Opel/Vauxhalls come with the 2.0L turbo mated to a 6spd ( F40 ) but the big question is if this 2.0L turbo is the Z20LET (iron block) or a version of the aluminum block ECOTEC.

Here are some of the euro ecotec engines.... http://www.opel-web.de/Zeichnungen/Motoren/Motoren.htm

Who knows.... I can't seem to get a real solid lead as to whether the F40 can be used on the iron block ECOTEC

How much would it cost to get the parts seperatly? That sounds wayyy more expensive.

I dont think 2,500usd is bad at all for the engine/tranny with 60k km on it. Hell Thats almost what its starting to cost to get our stock engine/tranny.

I'm not just after the tranny.. I want the engine too if I decide to boost furthur and as a spare since I put nearly 27k miles on my car a year and already have some odd 52k

The engine and f28 are a calibra 4x4 year '94
