Mis-firing???

Post by Mark K »

I did an engine flush yesterday, new spark plugs and fixed up my intake yesterday so the car was running better than ever... for a while.

On my way home from my sisters house (about 20-25 minutes or so...)
The car started to lose power and was revving in short bursts.
I got home and started the engine again and it was still reving in short bursts and shaking with each burst. When i pressed the accelerator it would suck air in, but it wouldnt do anything. It was like it wasnt getting fuel or something.

Is this what mis-firing is like?

Could an overly hot engine be casuing this? (remembering the engine flush and oil change) Or could it be a fuel pump/injector problem?

Its not the first time it has done this, usually if i let it rest for a little while, it will fix itself, but after a bit of driving it will start doing it again...
its a 97 cielo, 1.5L SOHC...

Thanks,
Mark

check the spark plug wires (AKA leads) and see if they are leaking.

for checking the injectors you got to remove each injector's socket and see if it affects how the engine behaves at idle, no or very mild change indecates a bad injector.

are your spark plugs gapped correctly?? the correct gap is 0.8mm also try removing all 4 spark plugs and compare how they look, the one that looks too different got a problem... maybe electrcal or fuel but you will be able to concentrate on one cyl. to diagnose.

The spark plugs should be fine...
The car was behaving this way before i changed the plugs and oil.
It was the reason i changed them in the first place...

Its the kind of thing that on and off... as in, the car will be fine for a while, then it will just start again un-expectedly... if i let the car rest for a bit, it will fix itself... then it happens again.

Im planning on getting new leads on the weekend n see how that goes.

got off my lazy ass and took a look at my engine bay:

the hose yuo mentioned goes to something like a solinoid mounted on the back of the block near the starter motor and the main coolant pipe across the engine... the other solinoid port goes to some piping that looks like fuel lines, marked as fuel and goes side to side with the fuel lines feeding the fuel filter.

i am sure this thing doesn't spray fuel but why the hell is it marked "high presssure fuel"?? what purpose does it serve anyways??
