How to check if my timing belt needs replacement

USE A TORQUE WRENCH!!!!!! to tight will wear your belt prematurely, and so will too loose. I had mine incorectly tensioned (too loose) by my local mechanics and it broke after 10000km's (6000ml) so now i only trust one mechanic with my car. Even the holden dealership got it wrong and the torque settings are stamped on the block

Bump for a question.....when my timing belt was taken off it said Gates on it...does this mean it was already replaced and then it broke again or do daewoos come with gates belts stock?

the OEM belt is Gates... or at least that is the case with my car.

My car is in the middle of a second belt change and second head job. It went at 63,000 and again at 117,000. I would suggest changing it every 45,000 miles. So you dont end up spending $1k!

im just saying that when it warms up in the spring im gonna change my timing belt, i HATE doing big projects like a timing belt when its cold out. no matter how warm the garage is, the car and the floor are freaking cold in the winter. also it doesnt hurt to change it too early, but it does hurt (really bad) to change it too late.
