HELP WITH TIMING
Alright guys I have a problem. I have a 1998 Nubira CDX 2.0 automatic tranny, my timing belt went two months ago and bent my valves. I got the head completely rebuilt and put everything back on. I have adusted the timing about 20 times and it still seems to be off. When I go to start it up it backfires through the carb. I am getting spark and fuel, so I know that not it. Am I aligning up the marks right for the cams and the crank? I have the arrows for the cams aligned with the top of the timing belt cover and on the outside of the crank pully it has a hole in the side of it that I have pointing straight down. Is this right? If not, I'm dying to know what I am doing wrong. I'm sure plenty of you have experienced the same thing as I have. PLEASE HELP....I'm about to give it to the junkyard I'm so mad. Thanks for any help that you are willing to offer.

Ok so now I've gone out and changed the timing marks to where the arrows face directly at each other. It almost started, no backfire anymore, and then it stopped trying to start. I checked the marks again and they're off!!! I went through this two more times and each time I line the marks up and try to start it, they aren't lined up anymore to where they would be facing each other. Any suggestions?

Not to be annoying or anything, are you sure you've got the right timing belt with the right number of teeth and such?
Just curious is all. I'm doing a timing belt change myself soon, I'm sorry you're having trouble with yours. And I wish I knew more about it so I could help you out, unfortunately I won't know much about it until after I've done it myself.

ok, so now I have everything all lined up perfectly to where the belt is tight and the cams are staying all lined up when I try to start it, but it still wont start. This is, however the closest that is has ever been. I have good compression, spark, and it's getting fuel. What am I missing? Since it's been out of commision for 3 months would the gas be bad? What else could be wrong? Thanks.

Is it a MIL light?
Before cranking did you turned engine over for two full turns?
Check the 4 compressions with a pressure gauge. Must be around 100psi.
Check the spark plugs/dual coil wiring path. Order is not evident. http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2634
Check for fuel pressure 41-47psi.
Check all electrical connectors you have worked around.
Check for flooded engine/plugs.
Look at How-To section.
Good luck,
Daniel
P.S. Where are you on our planet?

Ok, so now I have tried everything suggested and everything has come out just fine. Of course it still doesn't start. Does anyone know the how the crank pulley should be lined up? I have the hole on the outside of the pulley pointed straight down. Is this where it's supposed to be? I took off the pulley by the pulley bolt. It says in the book to take off the other four bolts, I took out these bolts, but couldn't get the two parts seperated. Is there another mark that I should be looking for when these two parts are seperated to line up? Please help!!!
By the way, I currently live in Omaha, Nebraska. Not by choice though, I'm in the U.S. Air Force and this is where they sent me. Can't wait to leave!

You are correct with the crankshaft gear position.
Did you removed this gear #63? If so be sure that the woodruff key #62 is still in place.
Otherwise if fuel pressure, ignition timing and valves timing are OK look also for gummed injectors.
Try to have your car scanned.
BTW I send on your hotmail the manual I have in two large files.
That's all I can do.

I had the same problem with mine. It turned out to be the cam gears, I had taken the gears off for cleaning before putting the new head on and when I put them back on I put them on backwards. It does make a difference with the timing marks so make sure your cam gears are right.
There is a picture in the how-to section that shows the differences in the gears to make sure you have the intake gear on the intake cam and the exhaust gear on the exhaust cam. The holes in the gear are way different so its easy to tell.
