Funny we should be talking about a turbo XE.... I just happened to be reading this on Astra MKII forum...

It sounds like the XE inlet cam is great..... but there was no mention of the exhaust cam.... perhaps that LET cam has less duration.
If you had an adjustable cam gear on both I'm sure you could adjust the exhaust cam to work decently.

Wow, I have absolutely no idea regarding details, nor cams.
I'll be honest, I know fuck all about cars, and just want mine to be pretty and fast. I'm going to get a mechanic do this for me cause I have neither the equipment, time, nor know-how.
So in the end it's probably best to buy it all and let them tell me what I need to do, and cut off their balls if they dick me around.

The lag comes when you have to spool a big turbo. The exhaust flow needed is so big that you need the engine to be producing enough power. That's where the lag comes from. The bigger the turbo, the higher the lag.
Anyway, with a little turbo the lag is negigible (sp?).

What my point was that with two identical motors, one an NA motor and one a boosted engine. On an NA motor you dont get ANY boost - so its like u have CONSTANT turbo lag on a boosted engine. Yes it gives all it supposed to - but thats still not positive boost - thus its like a boosted engine on lag? Maybe an abstract way of thinking...
Bottom line - Boost = torque = fun.

the engine will run like stock till the turbo kicks in.
you dont need big exhaust flow that much, it the high pressure that spools the turbo.
if you have the same diameter exhaust as the stock ones, the engine will run just the same till boost.
because a turbo is on a engine does not meen it will act different than NA before boost(all things remaing equal).
i am just thinking, have you driven a turbo motor and felt the difference between when it was NA and when it was turboed?
also, the turbine of the turbo does not restrict the exhaust like you think. it is almost just as good as stock. if i installed a turbo on your car with out plumbing the compressor to your intake, you will not know that there is a turbo in your car.
therefore, LAG is the time it takes the turbo to build boost. nothing to do with the engine.
things that cause engine lag is bad timming, restricted intake(turbo does not restrict intake. the intercooler acts like a chamber with reserved air for that sudden trottle plate openning), slipping clutch, etc. no turbo.

I have driven a car with different size turbos. As I said, the biger the turbo, the lower the power at low rpms. Even the idle sounds ill in such engine. But I'm talking about 2 bars, wich is somehing near 29 psi. The engine was prepared so its turbo is allways spooled, so I can tell nothing about lag in that car. But I have noticed turbo lag in other cars, like my former one. It had turbo from stock, but you can really feel the lag.
