JohnnyC's Ghetto Short Ram Intake

Post by JohnnyC »

AudacityRacing and I were chatting last night and he explained to me a way I could do a nice short ram intake (ghetto style) :D

Sounds great... Has more power... I LOVE IT!

The filter is a Steel Mesh Intake Filter from APC's REWorks. Cost $37 from Advanced Auto Parts. The PVC pipe cost me $.87. :D

You'll notice I decided to make a bracket to hold the filter in place so it would rattle around so much. I used a piece of aluminum, some double sided sticky tape, some foam, a few washers, and a little elbow grease to make it. Worked fabulously. I simply bent the metal to shape (it already had a bolt hole in it) and used the sticky tape to apply the layer of foam on it. I then used the bolt from the old airbox and the hole from that side to bolt it down. I did have to use some washers to space it out some (the bolt didn't have threads all the way down).

Total time: 1 hour 10 minutes including making brace bracket.

Overall... I think it looks great, works even better, and just makes me very happy! :)

Yeah man... You should make one of those brackets for yours too... It would be next to impossible for it to clank around in there now. :)

if i were you i'd buy an extension PVC pipe and install the filtet at the wheel well (where the resonator used to be) to gain the benefits of sucking cold air... you are sucking hot air now.

anyways it s some nice work you got their man, i hope you enjoy it.

Well... it really wouldn't be smart for me to do that actually. Unlike you, I live in an area where it rains or snows most of the year. I have an alternate plan to shoot some cold air up there.

The filter sits right above the hole in the wheel well. I figured I could put a tube going from that hole to the fog light (like a CAI). Then run that tube up to the hole under the filter. This should shoot a nice jet of cold air up to the filter without running into the problem of having my filter suck water.

Should I do a idle learn process now that I've done this? (Seems to be working great without it being done yet)

it won't hurt but my experiance tells me "don't fix it unless its broke"... if the car is running fine then let it be.

the ram shoot pipe is a good idea but at low speeds or at a traffic light you will suck loads of hot air as well... just do my idea but don't go too deep with the filter.

just extend the PVC pipe to the hole and then mount the filter from the other side... in this case the only thing you will be able to see from the wheel well is the filter (pipe too short so show up from down their) and the filter will be high enough to be away from water or so... give it a though, its going to be good.

actually... we had the discussion about a solid pipe instead of the ribbed rubber, and he heeded my personal experience in that with a rigid pipe, the oil vapors pool and run down to the filter and clog it up. plus, it's hard as nuts to make the ait sensor fit right.

that setup is the same as a rigid pipe really. i like the ghetto ram better personally anyway

Very very easy... and cheap too! :) I could convert it to a CAI like MMamdouh suggested... but I think for now I'll be leaving it as is. :) Out of curiosity... why does it matter if the air is cold or warm? Seems to me that the molecules in warm air would be moving more and would be more active when mixing with the fuel... which would mean more even distribution of fuel/oxygen... seems like that would mean a more complete burn.

Though I'm sure there is something about it I don't realize.
