Quiet exhaust and muffler/resonator question - photo page 2
So the time has come that i would like to upgrade my exhaust from the catback as i think it's "the weakest link".
At the moment ive got a 2inch horribly crushed bent catback with a long hotdog resonator and 2.5inch straight thru cannon.
Im going to 2.5inch mandrel bent (to match the downpipe) and keeping the same cannon, but the question is i want the exhaust to be quiet and deep, so how to achieve this?
I understand most of the muffling is done by the cannon muffler, but what can i do with the rest of the system to help supress noise and make it deep sounding (so im not after a raspy farty resonator-less honda sound at all).
Will there be any benefit in running two long hotdog resonators in series? Basically i want to get the system flowing better than the 2inch press bent exhaust i currently have (which wont be hard) whilst maintaining as quiet and deep a note as possible.
Liverpool Exhaust suggested a super turbo muffler - but i love my cannon look too much.

Re: Quiet exhaust and muffler/resonator/s question
cannons are only for the look, in most cases (not all) they create problems with backpressure, anyways, would you get the effect you want by running a conventionel resonator that is pretty big and your cannon with the 2.5' pipes?? I dont know much about turbos, but for a 1.6 turbo wouldnt 2.5' be too big?

2.5" would probably be perfect.
...sinces your cars turbo'd I think you'll get a deep sound no matter what, but I dont know this for sure

I didnt really think a 3" system was warranted on the little 1.5 SOHC.
From my understanding, turbo is slightly different to NA applications so far as backpressure is concerned. Backpressure = evil for turbo, just trying to get the flow and exhaust velocity right... When i take pics of the pipe they remove, you'll see how badly crushed it is in some areas.
The cannon is a straight thru drilled core muffler, its design provides the least back pressure of all for what i know.
I'll probably get this done in the next two weeks... so i reckon a video time might be coming on soon after

for a deep sound just have a muffler(glass pack) in the center somewhere.. it doesnt even have to be an expensive one.. just a cherry bomb will do and those only cost 20$ in the US and work well for getting a deep sound
i was running 2.5 with only a cherry bomb for a while and it was deep but because i didnt have another muffler at the end it was really loud and didnt like it.. could hear the turbo spool up like crazy though.. i think thats all you could here after 4k rpm

An extra cherry bomb/glass pack muffler - could be good. I was even thinking of running an extra motorbike muffler after the hotdog resonator?
I know what you mean about the turbo spool sound. As soon as you start to get boost all you hear is the turbo whine - there is no more exhaust note!
Im looking to stay with a resonator to get extra smoothness in the exhaust note. The turbo smooths out the sound really nicely, but the resonator does wonders too.

Alot of the Woo's ive heard that have gone resonatorless have that raspy sound in the midrange. Some people like that... im not one of them.daewoomofo wrote:i have a 2.5 inch flowmaster sitting in my moms garage i thought of butting on my woo. just straight piping the resonator and replacing the stock mufler with the flowmaster. what do you think would i get that raspy farty sound? cause i really hate that sound...

if you look at this pfd http://www.monroe.com.au/images/Utterly ... _march.pdf , it answers a question asked about an MX 5, and says a way of getting rid of the 'rasp' of DOHC 4 cylinders... just some food for thought

there is a resonator on the intake, and on your exhaust. more or less its just an empty box designed for noise surpressionJohnnyC wrote:Hmmm I thought the resonator was actually on the air intake like it's described in the How To by MMamdouh... But you guys are talking about something further down the line of the exhaust?

a friend of mine has a Magnaflow exhaust and it's by far the nicest sounding exhaust ever in my opinion... You can listen to sound clips from cars that have them on their web site... I'm not sure if any of them would fit a woo... but i love em...

a woo that is a work in progress
Well i got a day off work so this FINALLY happened today!
Went for 2.5" mandrels all the way, with a nice big straight thru hotdog and a big oval muffler and nice little tip.
Its WAY more covert than the huge droney cannon. Very quiet.
The car is crying for more boost now
Got a bit more turbo lag, but breathes better when on boost.
Pics to come - though im guessing most people wont like this muffler/tip combo, its far too subdued and non-race car looking compared to the cannon.
But
im over the moon happy!
