Broke a rear coil Spring
Hi all,
The rear coil spring on the drivers side of my 2000 Lanos broke yesterday. Is this a job I wanna take on myself?
While I have you attention, I also wanna change my instrument cluster, mine now is one with the tach in it, but I wanna put one in without the tach and install an aftermarket tach, does anyone know if the tachless cluster will just use the same 3 plugs that mine has now? My luck it won't.
Any input from you WooPros would be appreciated.

Hmmmm Chris... I do not know if you can clean swap out your gauge cluster or not... I do know that if you change out your gauge cluster, I would like to buy yours. See... I have the opposite problem. I have a 2000 Lanos with a gauge cluster without the tach. What I want is a gauge cluster with the tach. They both have three connections on the back.va3dwo wrote:Hi all,

Let me know. My gauge cluster is slightly modded with red needles instead of white. I would suggest a trade, but one or both of us would be without a gauge cluster during shipping (which wouldn't be fun for me since my Woo is a daily driver and it sounds like yours is too).
Let me know what happens even if you don't want to sell me your current cluster. I'm willing to roll the dice that plugging in your cluster with the tach will work perfectly in my woo.

replacing a rear spring is easy if you got the tools for it... actually what you need is a spring compressor, if you got that then you can do it yourself.
as for the cluster... yes the non tach cluster uses the same 3 sockets.

psssst... sell me your gauge cluster!
(I've tried to buy one twice from junkyards... first one had damage to it they couldn't see until they took it out... the other one didn't actually have the tach and they called me to appologize and cancel the order.)

Looks like I'll get a new set of springs and have my local guy replace them for me, gonna change both sides.
As far as my instrument cluster Johnny, mine is modded also, I got the white dials with black needles, added the Daewoo Logo and Lanos to the gauges too.
So I'm glad to hear that a cluster swap fits, but will all the gauges work properly, or am I gonna have to do some re-wiring?

I don't know if either of us will end up having to re-wire or not. The thing that leads me to think we'll have to do some rewiring is that the cluster without the tach has the gas gauge on the right hand side of the cluster and in the one with the tach it's bundled on the left with the temp gauge. I don't know if it automatically sorts the data through the circuitry in the cluster of it's done in the wiring leading into the cluster (as far as the differences go). I haven't found anyone else that has done the tach/non-tach cluster switch, so I think we'll both end up finding out.
That's a pretty nice cluster setup, but what color are the needles when it's glowing at night?

I think we need an answer from Mahmoud or one of the other WooPros about if the cluster is just plug-n-pray.....lol
I did the mod myself on my dials, the needles were my only mistake, I went black for the contrast against the white, and well they are black @ night also.

Hey!! After changing the springs & shocks on my car today, no spring compressor was needed to change the rear springs.
It was VERY easy!!
Loosen the rear lug bolts.
Jack the back of the car up and put jack stands under it so the rear suspension can move freely.
Remove the lug bolts & wheels.
Remove the bottom bolts from the rear shocks. They are 17mm.
Set the hand (parking) brake inside the car so it is good and tight.
Have a heavy/strong friend stand on the rear brake drum and push down.
Now, at this point, the rear suspension moves down out of the way of the spring and you can just lift the rear spring out by hand.
Do the same on both sides of the car and then follow the steps in reverse to put it all back together.
I hope this helps.

through out the history of the clustr swaps i saw their was only a problem when swapping to the tach cluster... some guys did the swap and needed no wiring whatsoever others had to wire the tach signal to the cluster's socket.va3dwo wrote:I think we need an answer from Mahmoud or one of the other WooPros about if the cluster is just plug-n-pray.....lol
in both cases every other gauge worked fine so i recon downgrading to a non tach cluster will have no problems whatsoever.. going the other way round might require extra wiring.

Your cluster wiring is probably the same if you both drive a lanos. When i put a cluster with a tac from a 1.5 into my Cielo i had to stuff around a bit with the wiring as mine had 2 plugs and the 1.5 had 1. Even if you have to mod the plugs its really not that hard. Just a matter of following the lines on the circit on the rear of the tacho. Oh and even if you have no tacho in your car when you bought it. All woos i've seen actually have a wire in the wiring loom for the tacho anyway (mine was white).
