I think you can see what it is all about from all the links there. What got people talking is the "gutter hook" technique.
A very important read is the "code" as mentioned in Wiki. First man across the finishing line is not the winner. Its mountain pass racing. Don't try this at your own home mountain pass. The locations mentioned are very real. In fact Discovery Channel had a feature on illegal street races and mountain pass drift racing was featured. BTW, the racer is a Japanese girl. Her face was mosaic'd out to protect her against authorities. The racing scenes that Discovery captured are truly fascinating and dangerous. The races take place even in heavy traffic.
Just by looking at the picture here does give me the creeps over attempting a drift. Imagine doing it at night.

It is this manga/anime that made the 86 a highly sought after car. I know of a few guys who paid huge sums of money for this out of production Toyota.
Shingo! Why am I all ways the bad guy? Oh yeah it must have been that stuff about running the other guy off the road. Haven't seen very much InitialD but would like to see them all.
I don't admit it very often because it is stupid dangerous but I prefer racing on the Eway in heavy traffic. Might not be as challenging as drifting mountain hairpins but I prefer front drive so drifting realy isn't my thing. I try to practice safety, and keep the fast stuff to isolated roads, but I drive the Eway almost daily and have been for a long time, so I have developed those combat skills. To bad they can't come up with a track event where the obsticles are a few hundred cars doing half your speed.
On a side note any one here in the states that wants that kind of action there is a place between North Carolina and Tenesse called Deals Gap that has the premier motor sports road in North America called the Tail of the Dragon. 318 curves in 11 miles on a road so tight an 18 wheeler can't fit down it. The Miata club holds a run and drift contest a couple of times a year and there are Hotels that cater to the motorsports people that come up to run the Tail.
