Why oh why do I have to be in Canada..... I'd give you $500 in a blink of an eye.

But yet again.... you are several thousand miles from me and it would cost me close to $1000 just to transport it up here!

I'm changing my direction on projects.... my Optra 5 is going to stay fairly stock.... and I will install my competition stereo into it.

My Turbo Optima (Lemans) will be stripped down and turned into an autocross vehicle.

So now I need a home for my turbo Forenza engine.... I have an 87 Sunbird GT siting in the back of my shop so I could turn that into a drag car.... but I really have my heart set on making a Lanos drag car since it's nice and light and it will give some publicity to the Daewoo name.

So.... if you have a way to get it up to somewhere close to the Canadian Border.... I would buy it from you for $750 to $1000.

I'd rather sell it to you because I know you'd give it a good home, and it would be pretty damn sweet to hear how my Lanos is progressing as a drag car. You'd probabally be able to use some of the remaining stock parts anyway...perhaps even the block could be salvageable.

But again, I'm stuck on this stupid little peninsula out of the way of everybody and in need of a quick sale. I wonder how much it would cost for me to stick it on a train and have it shipped to the border.

Probabally much more than either of us are willing to pay.

Unless of course you opt for a nice vacation to sunny Clearwater FL, home of one of the Top 10 beaches in America. Leave the wife and kids on the beach and come to the shop to swap in another engine, then set out on the journey home.

Update:

Cars in the running to potentially being my next car are:

1993 BMW 325i Sport.
-Low miles, but has hideous spinners and chrome grille which need to go ASAP. Right in the center of pricing @ $3,500

2001 Daewoo Lanos Sport.
-Only 39,593 miles, 5 spd., 100% mint condition and comes with warranty. Kinda pricey @ $4995

1984 Porsche 944 Standard Coupe.
-Only 55,200 miles, 5 spd, Needs AC recharge and paint job. Runs damn fine. Seller wants only $2,495

What do you guys think?

Any feedback on any car welcome.

i say get the daewoo... because you basically have a parts car if something happens (i.e. you have a head if a timing belt breaks, etc)...


it is a little expensive, but it's pretty low mileage and it is the sport edition (oh how i envy the transmission in them). the problem with all three is that parts are expensive to get good oem replacements and even more expensive to get upgrades (i know the average strut bar for a 944 is about 200 bucks).

I bet the Porsche will be a money pit ..... the BMW is probably the best vehicle for the buck (sorry Daweoo forum :oops: ) if you ask me.

$4995 for a Lanos seems expensive.....you should be able to get a decent Lanos or Nubi Hatch for around $3500 if you are patient.



Now that I've answered your question about which one is the best....... I say that you should forget about a new car and spend your money on a new engine/tranny.

Too bad a return flight to Tampa costs about $900 or Tom and or I would come down and help you throw in a new engine/tranny.

There really isn't that much to it..... a swap like that shouldn't take more than a day if you have a good selection of tools.

If you were swaping in a 2.0L that would be a different story.... the wiring along might take a good portion of a weekend.

But if you unhooking the old engine and droping in something identical..... it's just a matter of unhooking a half dozen bolts, pulling out the drive axles, unhooking the electrical harness and disconnecting the fuel/vacuum lines..... then you just reconnect everything in the same order you removed them.

All you really need is a cheap engine hoist ( $150 ) an assortment of metric tools and a torque wrench (air compressor and impact wrench would make it quicker )

Ideally.... you video tape yourself removing the various connectors/lines/bolts and mark them by wrapping them in yellow electrical tape with numbers. (or bagging bolts in Ziplock bags and write the number )

Then when you go to reassemble you can play it back on the VCR.... it's really not as hard as you might think

The 325 is a good car. It has a good engine and it's RWD. A little old though.


Sorry about the off-topic question but how's the sport's transmission compared to the SX one?

the sport trans has a short gear ratio, the sx trans has a medium gear ratio

I know it isn't hard swapping out the engine, but again, tools and where to do it is the issue (I live in a condominium complex where the best I can do is a carport). And again, I wonder how worth it it would really be. My car is a 1.6L auto sedan...not really the pinnacle of Daewoo excitement. Besides that, heat and AC are gone, various rattles in the interior coupled with scratches on the dash and cracks on the plastic from 200K miles of driving. Suspension is beyond done and should have been changed millenia ago. The body is respectable, but there are many paint chips and scratches along with a few dings, dents, and scrapes from so many years of ownership. Paint also has various imbedded particles.

Pretty much, if I were to get this car back up and running, the mechanical problem is the smallest.

I'd need at least $2000 to fix the body work (or at least find a donor car to swap the parts), give it a new quality paint job, spruce up the interior, do a complete suspension overhaul (all mounts, shocks, springs), and then go around the car changing anything that isn't up to par.

It isn't even the money that is the problem... It is just that this would take several weeks if not months to complete, when in reality I need another car ASAP. So, technically, I could spend a month or two fixing up my current car for $3000+, or I could just add $1500 and get an effectively new car this weekend.

I'll see how it goes.
