Painting My Interior

Post by chris2511 »

I bought some low quality spray paint and tried to spray part of my inside door handle, came up very crappy looking, patchy and everything. Can anyone tell me how to redo the dash etc, in a paint, preferably silver that will actually come up good? I dont want to spend all the money getting it done professionally, please help me out so we can use this as a future reference.
Thankyou.

What you need is Krylon Fusion paint for plastic.
As you have found, regular paint does not bond to plastic.

Here is the Krylon web page with information about the Fusion paint:

Here are the colors available:

Most people sand the dash and other plastic smooth so the painted surface has a nice smooth glossy finish.

You may want to get some other plastic and practice before you actually start with your car so that you can make it look good.

I've found that Dupli-Color Import automotive paint (in the small cans) bonds really well and has a really nice shine when sprayed on plastic. I've sprayed my little handle bezels and the buttons on my shifter. It looks good after a year and the buttons on the shifter have not worn yet.

You may want to Bondo the peice before painting it because just painting the bare plastic will accentuate its texture and make it look like orange peel.

I used Krylon fusion on my interior over a year ago (and about 30k miles) and I still havnt had any problems. I sanded and used primer first though which made it very very easy

Well, do you want to fully paint the dash or just the small trim pieces? If the whole dash is coming out, then by all means, sand, prime, and several coats of Krylon Fusion.

However if you want to paint just a few small trim pieces, then you'll be alright with getting the Dupli-Color import paint, cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol, and giving it a few very light coats. I did this 18 months ago and have not yet experienced any peeling, fading or cracking, even on areas that I handle every day (like the shifter).

I can get some pics of my interior if you'd like...

I'd like to see some pics. I may get to the point where I decide to paint some of the dash. :)

:) yeah! i yust got some "KIKA" metal spray "SILVER" and i tested it on cd plastic covers to check the power of constant touching and after 3 minutes on the cold it was perfect"

I used my finger up/down with alot of power to produce heat but even in this case the color was almost intact! whitout primer or even claning the surface!

In my prev car i made a 2x mistake! first my primer sucked more then the color! after some time in the sumer time i got the "sticky efect" whit color passing to fingers on temp. about 20C.

Test it 2x before using it
beter then regret it like i did! that mess made me split the price by 50% more on seling my car! interior was horible! And i spend my whole highschool with the dozer so i know how to use it!

Thank you for visiting the Krylon Web Site, we appreciate your interest in
our products. Unfortunately, the Krylon Product Line is not available in
Croatia. We do not have a vendor or distributor in Croatia at this time.

However, if you are interested in setting up a Krylon Account, I can
forward your request to the Krylon International Team. The minimum export
order for Krylon products is $1,000.00.

Sincerely,
