ratcheting shifter
im just looking at all of my options here. i have a 01 lanos 1.6 dohc automatic. i really want to convert it to a manual. but if i cant i want to beef up the 4t-40-e trans it has. are there ane ratchiting shifters that will fit or is the stock on the only option? also i have heard about shift imporovers, which ones are good, which ones suck? if i cant have a manual im gonna try to make my auto cool, thanks for any help.

The GM 4T40E transmission is a very common transmission in the US. Very popular American cars use it, so parts can be found anywhere.
There is a large supply of rebuild kits, LSDs, countless shift improvers and many other upgrades. The only problem is that the gearing on the transmission sucks. It leaves you out of gas at like 100-105 MPH if you keep it in fourth. If you jam it in D3, it will keep pushing to maybe 110-115 MPH until the ECU forces it to shift.
Your transmission if well maintained should hold you to about 200 Ft/Lbs of torque, so you should be alright without any major upgrade other than a shift improver.
They range from simple 2 setting improvers that wire up behind the dash, to more complicated in-line ones that plug into the harness in the engine bay and give you complete control over desired line pressure. According to member Woohoo, the shift improver is a great upgrade.

thanks for the advise, but does anyone know of any ratchiting shifters like this one? http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id=pr ... t=2&pid=21
my brother put that shifter in his car. It fits his th700 but thats a RWD trans. Those shifters are cable opperared and they come with various mounts for different transmissions. Another problem you will run into is that you will have trouble mounting it if your car has a centre console. My brothers car doesnt so its on the floor. You may be better off looking at a console megashifter, plus the mega shifter is less of an annoyance to put into reverse
