Stainless exhaust

Post by kinkyllama »

Well i cant find any shops to do mandrel bending and from what i hear if I find one it will cost an arm and leg anyways (~$500). I found a guy thats willing to do stailess exhaust work. Looks nearly as good as mandrel bends but maybe someone with experiance with this kinda thing can tell me otherwise. He wants $75 an hour and isnt sure how long it would take; he is only charging hourly for the work, nothing else...anyone have an idea of how long a full exhaust and lil down pipe for the wastegate would take? Im having a 3" exhaust from the turbo to the muffler done, 1.5" downpipe for the wastegate.. maybe just one bend and a straight pipe, and a straight through pipe that i can replace the CAT with when i go to the track. Also he is a local trustworthy auto-xer. Also anyone wanna recommend a muffler for turbo applications(i.e. something that'll hold up and not sound like crap)?

Anyways here is some pics of his work:

Here is materials price:
$40.00 6 inch flex section
$95.00 stainless u-bend
$65.00 90 deg bend
$72.00 tight 90 deg bend
$15.00 a foot for straight
$12.00 a foot for 1.5 diameter for WG dump
$30.00 90 deg bend 1.5 dia for WG dump
$15.00 per O2 bung and plug

*EDIT...All piping is 304 stainless .065 wall and does anyone know anything about a "slip style band"? Theres a pic of one just after the flex pipe is the 2nd picture, its the bronze band. The guy told me he could do a slip style band for the CAT and straight pipe; making it much easyier to switch between the two

Looks like good work, but after a hard bump or corner, one of the welds could break or crack causing an exhaust leak. You'll have to check the exhaust after every race, deep pothole, so on.

However, I really like the work and it should work well with a 2.0 Turbo setup.

This style of welding (around the joint of two pipes) is very commong with custom exhaust setups. I deal with that all the time at my part-time tuning job @APEX.. If its welded right, I am yet to see one come apart. I have seens huge bents in the piping (after running a curb or similar), but I am yet to see such weld to come apart.

Arse muffins!!!!

Sorry... I just had to say that.

My 2.5" stainless mandrel bent exhaust cost me... well...less than a single one of your "u-bends"

I can't remember how long it took me.... I think it was around 4 to 6 hours but then again.... it was a prototype and I don't do this for a living.

That's from the cat back... and I used a Magnaflow stainless muffler.... it has a decent sound.

Ummm... you know..... now that I have a prototype it wouldn't be hard to copy

I question the choice of 3" piping..... but I'm sure there are lots of guys who think 3" would be the perfect size for a 2.0L turbo application.

Then again... they can eat my arse muffins!!! (sorry... I just can't help myself.... I have a rare version of Tourette syndrome... my fingers type all on their own  )

nice pipe arse muffin lol it is fun to say
check the prices, the Dynomax mandrel pipe I used was cheaper then that, You have more spent in pipe then I did in the entire catback labor and all. $75 per hour is about average. It took about 9 hours for the cat back but there was alot of trying and changing (and people coming in and out of the shop causing distractions)
