plastice intake max PSI

Well GM tested the plastice intake that is on the Aveo, I also believe its te same on the 1.5L But any ways it takes 8 psi before it explodes. so if you have a new gen with the plastic manifold you should be safe at 5 - 7 psi but no more

8psi???

I am shocked......8psi is practically nothing.... even thin wall plastic tubing will take 120psi of air pressure without breaking.

Did you check the thickness where the break occured?

I just can't fathom the reason for this damage.... perhaps vibration cause microfractures in the structure and gave a weak point for the pressure to push on.

I mean 8psi....you can produce ten times that amount by crushing it with your hand!

I just don't know what to say.... that is crazy.... there must be something wrong.... there must have been some prior damage or a weak spot for that thing to "explode"

I suppose the easiest way to combat the problem would be to reinforce it with fibreglass.

Were you dynoing the car when this happened??

Did it suck plastic into the cylinder and damage the engine and turbo ??

No GM was testing boost on it. A member on the Aveo forum works for GM proving grounds. He was on the AVeo project before GM scraped the plans. so GM has given up on this engine. No he told me it exploded around 8 psi.

That's why if I decide to boost, I'm just gonna swap the whole top half with the lanos, I guess it should bolt right onto the aveo block?

I still think that it's very abnormal.... think about plastic compressor line.... it's 1/16" nylon.

Sure Nylon is probalby stronger than the crap they made the intake out of.... but you would think the cast material would have had reinforced fibres mixed into it (like many structural cast plastic structures)

I just don't know what to think.

Anyways..... how about the Corsa 1.6L intake manifold.... it's aluminum and I think it's an improvement over the Lanos intake.

Sure it needs to be sourced from another country.... but you might be able to find one cheap in the UK

Hell.... get a manifold made for you..... it's not rocket science.... I know a guy who could do one up for something in the range of $300

Now don't quote me on this.... I'd have to take a good look at the Aveo intake and make sure there are no surprises.

I suppose I could rent an Aveo for the weekend, remove the intake and make a copy of the flange.

Hmmm.... or I guess I could use my brain and borrow an intake gasket instead

a 2 liter botttle of soda can haddle almost 200 psi.. it does seem to be odd that it can only handle 8 psi...

yes a 2 liter bottle is 1 piece of plastic compared to a intake that is plastice welded in a couple of spots. remember that this intake is not all 1 piece. it is plastic welded, which is the weak spot. Of course I may buy a spare intake and pressure test it myself.
