exhaust cutout

Post by kinkyllama »

Well im thinking about going with an exhaust cutout once the turbos on. Not just for the performance but the cool factor.

For those of you that dont know what it is. Its a cutout in the exhaust.. you use the exhaust normally but with the flip of a switch inside the cabin your exhaust is switched to dumb out wherever you want. This way i can go with a somewhat restritive, LIGHT, cheap, and quiet exhaust (i.e. sleeper) for daily driving but with the flip of a switch dumb the exhaust out right after the engine for a bit more power and roar.

What are your guys opinions? Im thinking 2.5" but can choose from 2" or 3"+ also.

turbo = 3" exhaust, even if it's just a dump pipe.

the thing about the way gases flow is that when there is a direct flow with little resistance... versus a restrictive flow... the air will almosst always flow through the non-restrictive pattern, and creata a vacuum on the other side. this is the concept of spray guns (paint, carwash, etc). think of it like you think of an airplane wing. the faster air creates a low pressure, where the slow air is high pressure. when the air moves down the dump it's moving very fast and creates a higher pressure inside the standard exhuast path.

long and short... dump pipes end up needing the same size as the standard exhaust for the purpose of flow.

are dump pipes legal for your track?

ahh i see. hmm... Maybe i'll just stick with a big ol 3" exhaust and no cutout. I figured with the cutout too that at least i knew it wouldnt sound like crap cuz i could restrict it and make it quiet.

I dont see any reason why they wouldnt be but am not sure.

Well im not going with the exhaust cutout.. basicly just more stuff to add to the car and its not really worth it other than the cool factor.

So 3" or 3.25" exhaust, no cats? maybe a CAT for the street but definitly not for track... leaded fuel is cheaper than unleaded.

I was thinking about doing something like that myself... I think that would be really cool and very loud if you install it right after the headers.
