50k mile tune up?

Well.. im almost at 50k miles on my car :cry: What all should i do for a tune up?

-Im gonna go clean the spark plugs now.. any tips?
-I need to change the coolant systems fluid and add redline watter wetter.
-Im gonna have my tranny flushed and put better fluid in there.
-Brake pads and rotors are OK. Fluid was recently flushed.
-I already go through the whole car and tighten bolts after races.

You can do the whole throttle body sensor cleanup if you feel up to it, and also, it would be a good idea to change your fuel filter.

Also, it would be a good idea to lube the spark plug wire boots with some dielectric grease to seal them in from the elements and allow for easier disassembly later on.

my father always runs a slick50 treatment, or a gasket refresher though the oil system at every tune up.

i was going to suggest an intake cleanup job but i remembred its a 2.0 so it is going to be hard to get rid of the accumilated cleaner in the bottom of the intake... you will have to remove the whole intake to do that job i am afraid. :roll:

Please tell me your planning on changing your timing belt..... with the amount of racing you do with that car you should do it ASAP.

Your putting significanly more stress on the belt running up into the higher RPM levels on a regular basis.

Odds are..... your timing belt will last you a while longer.... but it's an expensive mistake if it happens to break and slip one notch.

Why wouldn't you simply replace the spark plugs?

For the cost.... you might as well get rid of them.... as they get older your horsepower decreases....one time we changed the plugs while it was on the dyno and you wouldn't belive the difference in horsepower response....I think it was about 3hp difference and I only have about 10k on my car!

If your car is like mine.... you have oil in the bottom of the intake.... the 2.0L engines would really benifit from a catch can.

It doesn't really hurt anything as it's well below the ports but if your racing it's possible that you might get it splashing around and some could enter into the cylinder and foul up your plugs (as well as cause a nice carbon buildup on the piston and cylinder head )

You could get four feet of brand new clear plastic hose ( say 1/2" diameter) and duct tape it onto your shop vac.

Ensure that the plastic hose is completely clean.... open up the throttle body.... shine a flashlight down there and then insert the hose.

Then turn on the shop vac and watch the oil going up the tube.

Ideally it would be easier if one person held the flashlight and the throttle body open while the other used the hose to suck out the oil deposits.

Be very very gentle.... don't put any pressure on the intake butterfly.

If I were you..... I'd also get some injector cleaner and add it to the tank for the next two fill ups.

Your statement about tightening bolts after races worries me a little........ which bolts are you tightening? are you using a torque wrench to make sure they are torqued to the manufacturers specs?

I've already cleaned the TB and intake.

Im not gonna bother with the fuel injector cleaner as those injectors will be outta here soon.


Yes im using a torgue wrench and im tightening pretty much every bolt i can easily get too and know the torque stats.. if i dont know what it should be torqued to i just make sure its okay.

Thanks for all the other input... ill get into it.

Oh and yes.. the timing belt, i need to get a new one from Tom. Mine hasnt been on there all 50k miles though.. maybe 30k

Im pretty sure i remember reading my fuel filter doesnt ever need to be changed. I was also told its really hard to change it on my car.. and maybe built into the fuel pump or something of that sort?

if your fuel system is like the one on the 2.0 Nubira then what you read is crap... the fuel filter gets dirty during usage and starts to be more and more restrictive till it is totally blocked.

i replace mine every 6,000 miles as our fuel is loaded with crap, maybe you can do better milage on yours but in the end you got to replace it... the material inside is uncleanable/washable so you can do nothing about it but replace it.

So how do you change the fuel filter anyways?

Isnt it built into the fuel pump or something like that?

as for the no. of filters... i have two... one on the fire wall as shown in the how to and the other on the fuel pump, the one on the pump was never cleaned for the past 60,000 kms.

i don't think the one on the pump is replacable... is kinda funny looking built in cloth or so that you can't replace as a separate part... don't quote me on that as i never took my pump off for close inspection of the filter.

i got all that from various people that did the cleanup as well as my mechanic... also note that this is a lanos pump i am talking about so you could have a different setup on your ride.

Alright. I think its the same for mine.. thats why i said earlyier that it doesnt need to be replaced but i wasnt aware there were two fuel filters.

Hey Kinky what's up if your gonna change the fuel filters let me know where are they located, but on the my old pump it didn't see any filters. My fuel pump went bad after 15k maybe cuzz bad fuel here. We get it from Venezuela. not dissing anyone who is from Venezuela.

Well the service manual only shows one fuel filter in the forenza;which is the one in the fuel pump and is not servicable. I thought it had two fuel filters
