PVC or stainless for CAI pipe??

PVC or stainless for CAI pipe??

which is better to use for a CAI pipe? stainless steel or PVC??

i see that the PVC is much cheaper, lighter and can be made to fit any engine setup so frankly i don't see the benefits of using metap pipes for CAI unless their are issues that i am not aware of.

to give yoy and example: a standard issue short ram intake pipe for a lanos will cost some 150 LE ( 26.30 USD) whereas we made a CAI pipe out of PVC's for Zikas' Nubira and it costed us 15 LE (2.63 USD)... OK it doesn't look as nice as the stanless steel pipe but you got a CAI setup for 10% of the price of a short ram.

if someone knows why stanless is better than PVC please advice... so far we found nothing that makes stanless better than PVC but looks.

i never had a problem out of my pvc short ram... but a lot of people say it can put dangerous chemicals into your intake system, plus it holds heat better.

how can it put dangerous chemicals into the intake? as in dicompose of heat? what are the effects of those chemeicals on the engin internals and performance?

how can it hold heat better? i though metals used to do that, also can schelding the intake solve that issue?

the structure of pvc is such that i holds heat very well. it's just the nature of how they manufacture it (pvc is normally pourus, so when you cut it you see lots of holes and air bubbles... the air traps heat and it hols heat better)




i was looking at the materials data sheets for pvc and it lists the vapor of pvc as a carcinogen (cancer causing agent). that's not to say that using pvc will give you cancer... but you can see why it's not the best idea. the main and most comon issue with pvc vapor is "nervous system depression" where your body doesn't respond as fast or as precisely



as many people as there are that use pvc... i think you'd be ok in teh health department












another thing i stumbled on is that pvc has a very low melting point. as such, high engine temp can cause the core to deteriorate and then where there is pressure (like where you clamps attach), you can get failure of the material (it breaks).

the cost doesn't justify it, and i'm still living, so go ahead and use it :)

In my opinion i dont think it can put dangerous chemicals into your engin since the same stuff is used to make lanolium floors and water pipeing... also it holds heat more cause pvc is mad to alow little oxagen it and none out, so its suckin in a little heat but not enought to make almost any difforence... it should work just fine the only real problem is cracking during the winter

i was lookin at that too but were i was lookin it said it was only saposed to cause cancer if you heat it up and cool it off rapidaly or burn it

great info man...we currently have PVC intake on Zikas' 2.0 Nubira and Aymoon's 1.5 Lanos (both got K&N filters) and i am thinking of doing so as well... i will start by making a ram tube from the bottom of the OEM airbox to the fog light hole for starters till i get a K&N filter then i am going for a ful CAI setup.

I ran my intake pipe all the way to the fog light hole in my nubi and it sounds, looks, and works great

any tips on piping size?? i heard that going too big is bad... even worse than using too small piping so what is recommended for 1.5, 1.06 and 2.0 engines we have?

Well on my 2.0 i have a 3 inch pipe but for a smaller engin i would use 2 1/2 inch pipe and that should work just fine.. and for your filter dont just get the cheapest one you can find i did that and ended up with fuzzy stuff all in my fuel injectors.... not fun to clean out, i would go with a k&n or g-reddy filter. One more thing when you mount it make sure it still have room to move but not enought to make noise or break stuff. When i mounted min it wasent going nowhere.... well when i cranked my engin it shookit right out of socket lol

So just keep some of that stuff in mind

What about fiberglass? It's lite like carbon, it can stand big temeratures, and it doesn't crack on winter...

Yea you could use fiberglass but you would have to use alot of it and it would be really hard to make.. but i sure it could be done

There fine but i dont recomend the foam filters cause they colect moisture and it can suficate your engin and make it stall.. but thats only if you mount it in the front bumper... next to the engine it should be fine... So what r your plans exactally :?:

The surface of steel is always more plain than the surface of pvc so there is less resistance for the streaming air!
