HELP! 2000 Lanos stickshift obd2 failure fuel pump not prime

Post by 2000lanos2nr »

Just bought my brother's 2000 Lanos for $100 because he has given up on it and said it will never run right again. When you try to crank it the fuel pump does not prime, the computer does not function (no obd2 function) but if it is warmer weather (60f or warmer) the little woo cranks and runs perfect! A friend of mine said that my Cold Crank sensor was out, never heard of such a thing but I went to Autozone and ask about it and they also had never heard of a Cold crank sensor. Basicly: What is wrong with my car!? HELP!

their is no such thing as a "cold" crank sensor... their is only a cranck position sensor... if it is bad it will trigger the CEL and yuo can scan the car and get the DTC for it.

check the fuses and relays for the fuel pump for starters and give us more feedback on the car itself like:

1- car/engine/tranny type.
2- kms/miles on the car.
3- ignition system serviced kms (spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil pack).
4- fuel system serviced kms (injectors, filter, pump).
5- air filter serviced kms.
6- engine mods list if available.
7- exact discription for the problem.
8- associated charactristics for the problem (when car hot, goes over 60 mph, turning left, A/C on,etc...)
9- CEL status (on, off, blinking) and prefferably the DTC code you got after the OBD scan in case the CEL is on/blinking.
10- any recent engine service done even if it is a very routine one.

Badly serviced

Post by 2000lanos2nr »

Got some details from my brother, I had to smack him around some just for the lack of service he gave this poor woo!

1. 1.5L etech engine 4 cyl, Manual transmission
2. 120K Miles
3. Sparks, wires changed about 1K miles ago, coil pack never been serviced.
4. As far as I can tell the Fuel Pump, Filter and injectors are all original! Never serviced never changed!
5. New Air Filter (oddly enough)
6. No engine mods
7. The engine will not turn over and the Fuel Pump does not prime, the CEL remains off even when turning switch on.
8. Car will crank and run normal if the temp outside is about 60f degrees.
9. CEL remains off even when turning switch on. OBD reports can not connect
10. Thermostat replaced less than 2K miles ago (problems seem to have started when car was taken in for a recall servicing, do not know for what, brother says he doesn't keep up with all that!)

first off a 120k miles on a fuel filter is one hell of a long milage on a fuel filter, replace it immediatly... i am sure it is clogged as hell and no fuel can reach the injectors.

after you do that try to see if the fuel pump works again if not then you have to check all your fuses and relays and the CEL bulb indeed... if the indecator doesn't light during startup then its either fried or you got some wiring problem or in worst case you got a bad ECU but lets take it one step at a time.

check for the sockets of the ECU... its either under the passenger seat or behind the right kick panel, see if the sockets are properly connected and are not contaminated by any fluids or corroded or so.

do ther same check at the fues panel at the left kick panel and the fues/relay box in the engine bay... replace the faulty fuse(s) and/or relay(s)... having the car start at only certain temp. makes me think their is some bad wiring (or earthing) somewhere that causes the electric flow to be cut and connected Intermittently.

do the checks and tell us what you find.
