Well.... the 1.6L SOHC is a dog.... it makes very little power.

It's based on the same 1.6L DOHC block in the Lanos but they have multiport fuel injection and I'm going to assume you only have throttle body fuel injection.

If you replaced your pistons and put in a higher compression that would make a great deal of difference.

I'd imagine yours are 8.8:1 stock.... if it's the same as here in north america.

If those were bumped up to 10:1 and a different MPFI intake was used it would give major increases in power.

I think the easiest power is to dump in a bigger 2.0L engine..... the C20XE would make your car quite a bit quicker.

Efrain has the same car as yours.... and his C20XE makes for quite a bit of power.

cold air intake... or at least short ram intake.

You can go to a muffler shop and have them make you a crinkle bent exhaust for under 200bux including the muffler. Id recommend getting the muffler yourself that way you have more choice and then they'll charge like ~$130 to do a cat back exhaust w/ the muffler.

Upgrade the ground wires... i can seem to find the topic now but try doing a search

remove intake resonator or get ram air intake or better cold air intake
remove catalytic converter
get bigger spark plug wires
NGK V grooved spark plugs
after market muffler
bigger exhaust piping...2.25"

no idea about prices as i live half way accross the planet but the HP gains are maybe some 7-8 HP if you did all that stuff... also the car will feel more responsive which is as good as gained HP.

Uh oh...the oxymoron resurfaces. CHEAP and POWER should never appear in the same sentence without the control word NOT somewhere in that very sentence. Even simple mods if not done correctly can lead to problems that cost more than the mods themselves.

you got that right man but it depends on how much "power" you are seeking form the "cheap" methods you do... if a resonator removal and CAT bypass can give you 2-3 HP more then it is cheap power indeed, it won't hurt to throw in some NGK spark plugs to make the car feel faster during acceleration as well... we are still in the "cheap" department and the car WILL feel faster.

it depends on how a person weights power vs. cheap so if anyone falls to the ebay stuff that clames 20HP gains from some cheap ass chip or so then this way out of logic... on the other hand a resonator removal job that costs nothing but 10 min. of work then this is cheap power indeed.

it really takes a man just a little knowledge about how cars work to realize that cheap power is a thing of fantacy... the only thing you can get for cheap is little ponies that are hidden due to fuel economy, environmental and mass production issues... other than that you have to have deep pockets to go upstairs for the "real" power department.
