Timing belt install help?

Post by lukea37 »

I am in the middle of installing the timing belt in my 1.6L Nubira. I have removed the old belt and am ready to install the new timing belt.

The only problem I have is that the timing mark on the left side camshaft gear is slightly out of place. This is shown in the blue part of the picture below:

Would I be right to turn this cam clockwise until it aligns with the other cam, or would this cause damage?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

clock wise or counter clock wise is not a problem... the only problem is if you do install and run the engine with the marks not aligned.

just make sure the two marks are aligned as illustrated in the "how to" then do the installation.

hey question mmamdouh...

if the engine is at tdc on two pistons... wouldn't rotating it cause a little kissing between pistons and valves?

rotate that puppy counter-clockwise to be safe!

i guess so... i guess in this case you have to rotate the cam gear counter-clockwise as Auda said.

ok now we need to set a rule for that... should we use the shorter path to the aligned position? or just rotate - with no exess force in any direction till the marks are aligned??

i would go shortest distance unless you hit resistance... but go slow and go softly so you can feel if...

i was thinking about it...

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE PISTON LOCATION WHEN THE CRANK IS ROTATED TO IT'S CORRECT TIMING LOCATION ALIGNMENT?

that would make a lot of sense to find out first... the pistons may all 4 be in the middle of the stroke they are on during this... but i do not know (i will consult the manual of doom here is a while)

Well I slightly moved the cam counter-clockwise and have installed the timing belt.

I am now finished the timing belt install however my car is now running very lumpy. Does anyone know what could have caused this? Could it be that the belt is too tight?

Any ideas would be helpfull.

Thanks

did you check the tensioner marks before continuing the installation?
are all the sensor sockets in place?
do you have a CEL?

i don't know for sure but on other cars that notch usualy marks the TDC for cyl. 1 so in this case both cyl. 1 & 4 will be at TDC... this is not a confirmed fact' i just thought that logical thinking will lead to this conclusion.

still wating for solid confirmation on that.

i firgured for ease of timing it would be tdc as well... which gives you the perfect setup to damage a valve by rotaing the wrong way

therefore... i think we should make an amendment to the how to to talk about that. if you are a person who has performed a head gasket replacement... this would be very very valuable info to prevent something nasty from happening to your woo!

you are right but the question still stands... what to do in such case? shorter distance or regular rotation direction?

again logically speaking you are turning the cam gear with hand so even if you hit the piston the cam will stop and no damage will occur (unless you use a wrench or so to force the cam to rotate or so).

i think the best way is: "rotate in any direction preferably the one that will make the shortest adjustment and in case the cam gear seazed... do not use excessive power to rotate it instead, go the other way round."

what do you think man??

sounds good. point is i don't want someone to mis interpret and think they have to turn it one way... cause then they get the wrench to try and force it past the point where the valves are making love to the piston and such. i know that's a situation of ignorance, but there are tons of people coming through the website looking simply for info like this how-to.

your qouted stuff up there sounds fine to me

Another question

Post by lukea37 »

It was running rough because the timing mark on the cam gears where out 1 notch. I fixed this and the car is now running normal however it is now making a tick, tick, ticking noise.

The more revs you give the car the faster it ticks. It was not doing this before I installed the timing belt.

Any idea's as to what this could be.

Once again I thank everyone for your help.
