Cryo treating a turbo

Post by PrecisionBoost »

I was reading a good article in one of the latest tuner magazines on cryo treating turbos.

They were talking about a "tractor pull" guy who was having to replace his turbos every 6 pulls (which adds up to alot of money)

After cryo treating them the turbos lasted around 144 pulls which was a very drastic improvement in wear.

Basicly they take the parts and submerge them in -300 degree liquid nitrogen and then they bring them out and slowly warm them to something like +300 degrees.

I think they do it about 15 times over about a week and the end result is a much better internal metal structure that doesn't warp under high temperature.

Because the metal stays true to it's original form the whole turbo runs smoother and the bearings last longer.

I personally like the idea of doing some metal treatments as well as ceramic coating so I might end up sending some of my components and or block away for treatment during the build up process. (which should start very soon if I can scrape some money together)
