GM of Canada Unveils New 2004 Chevrolet Optra5 Hatchback
Montreal, Quebec (Thursday, January 8, 2004) - Today at the Montreal International Auto Show, General Motors of Canada unveiled the new 2004 Chevrolet Optra5, a new and contemporary hatchback. Continuing to strengthen the Chevrolet lineup and go head-to-head with the imports, the Optra5 will offer style, functionality, sport appeal and "fun-to-drive" characteristics that cater to the needs of today's first time new car buyers. Unique to Canada, the Optra5 will start arriving at Canadian dealerships in spring 2004.
Joining the Optra sedan in the small car market, the Optra5 will assure Chevrolet's presence in the growing hatchback segment. The Optra5 will be available in base and LS models. Offering the lowest base price in its competitive class, the Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the base just begins at $16,190, with the LS model starting at $18,140.
"The all-new Chevrolet Optra5 features a sporty and stylish appearance that will appeal to young Canadians looking for an affordable, functional, and dependable car that is fun to drive," said Marc Comeau, Vice-President, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing, for GM of Canada.
This hatchback offers the same impressive list of features as the Optra sedan - plus more functionality and a distinctive exterior and interior design.
Sporty Exterior
The exterior of the Optra5 features an international design with a luxurious yet muscular appearance. Unique all-new sheet metal makes the statement of sporty youthful styling.
Short front and rear overhangs and the pronounced shoulder line are characteristics of its unique expressive styling. The sleek exterior lines highlight the projection type headlamps and the European styled clear lens taillamps. Inset fog lamps and 15-inch wheels with sporty wheel covers further accentuate the youthful appearance. The large rear window makes the rear end appear elegant and well-proportioned and allows more light to enter the interior.
The Optra5 features the Chevrolet traditional front grill with a center bar and gold bowtie, and unique Optra5 badging prominently displayed on the rear hatch door.
For those wanting to make a bold statement, the Optra5 offers an available Appearance Package featuring unique 15" aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, leather steering wheel and shifter knob, steering wheel radio controls, molded mud guards, power sunroof and an 8 speaker stereo system.
Refined Interior
Inside the passenger compartment, the Optra5 looks fresh and contemporary. The interior features a two-tone dash with deluxe silver metallic instrument panel, and stylish round HVAC vents. Portraying an upscale European look, it offers two-tone interior fabrics, an intuitive instrument layout and countless storage compartments that promise a very inviting driving environment.
Offering a competitive list of standard equipment, the Optra5 includes a four-speaker AM/FM/CD, tilt steering, intermittent wipers, and 60/40 split rear seat. Air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and cruise control are standard features on LS models.
It offers a surprising level of comfort and convenience with its spacious and stylish interior and the endless functionality of a hatchback.
Performance
Optra5 is powered by a 2.0-litre, 16-valve DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 119 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic with step gated shifter.
The Optra5 features a sophisticated four-wheel independent suspension system with MacPherson struts, offset coil springs and a stabilizer bar for the front and a MacPherson strut dual link suspension with coil springs and a stabilizer bar is used in the rear. Combined with the 15-inch all season steel belted radials and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, these features provide exceptional ride quality and control that make the Optra5 as fun to drive as it is economical to own and operate.
Safety
Optra5 provides a comprehensive safety package that includes standard front dual stage air bags for driver and front passengers, child safety door locks, power window lockout, daytime running lamps, and 4-wheel disc brakes with available anti-lock brakes.
Front seats have comfortable lap and shoulder safety belts with pretentsioners and shoulder belt height adjustors. All five seating positions are fitted with 3-point seat belts. For greater safety, all models are equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system for child seats in the two outboard rear-seat locations.
True to the Chevrolet brand, the Optra comes with the assurance of GM's 5-year/100,000km powertrain and a 3-year/60,000 km total warranty, as well as GM Roadside Assistance and courtesy transportation services.
