a friend with bad fuel meter

Post by nefary »

I have a friend with a slight proplem

his proplem started when he leaves his car in the direct sunlight . he came back to the car he find that the fuel guage's needle refer to the red dash at the E sign. after a period of normal operation of the car it refer to the right value.

he disassimbled the fuel pumb & found lots of mud & fussies on it so he cleaned it good with gas and some cleaners and assimbled it back

directly when connecting the -ve cable of battery back the guage raised up to reach the middle dash ( the car actually had a 10L in tank) . so he went to fill the tank and see what happen

the proplem now that the guage refer to the F dash until the car had a 20L in its tank and start to get down to reach the middle dash when the car had no fuel in it

any ideas?

relocate the fuel gauge needle according to the amount of fuel in the car... check the how to section about that.

you know if the proplem with needle it would raise from 0-40L in the car without refer to the dahses in the guage( the meter has a range)

but the proplem is the meter has no motion for the tank with less than 20L

you can avoid the purpose is in the guage I think it is in the control circuit

maybe it is trying to go over the F mark and can't when the car is full of fuel... when the fuel level drops it goes down with no problem.

i am not really sure... i am just guessing.

the fuel guage specially use up & down voltage that is mean that when you fill the tanke with any amount of oil the up signal reach to the meter & the opposite thing is right. that is mean that the meter ( as you guess) have a shift in reading . it must go over the F mark .

I make an experiment. adjust the needle to the opposite diriction of reading ( the needle refer to the left hand side ) and when I turn the engine on it came back to its previous value

any other ideas from the forum???
