thermostat and fuel filter question
i need to replace the fuel filter, but one end of mine is the metal end and it looks like a few plastic pieces may have broken off. what tool will i need to remove the filter from the metal end?
more pressing, my woo recently 'died'. IE, the engine sounded like it was idling rougher than usual, then on the way home, a clanking-type noise, like metal slightly hitting metal, started sounding. at that point, the car started sputtering bad. as i was about 10 blocks from home, a brief cloud of white smoke belched out my exhaust, and my temp gague started to climb. when i made it home, coasting mind you, it smelled of water, which is exactly how my teg smelled when its thermostat went kaput.
when i turn on the daewoo now, it starts up if i give it gas, then when it idles its chugging bad. no metal sounds, just sounds like it did when one of my spark plugs came loose and i was down a cylinder.
what gives? it starts but i have to really give it gas to get it to rev up.

When your temp guage went up you should have stopped driving immediatley. Even if the engine is overheated for a short period of time, it can cause major damage. How many miles are on your car? What is your reason for changing the fuel filter?

fuel filter needs it. you gotta give it gas when you start it up or it takes its own sweet time starting.
i didnt notice the temp gague (i shut the car off before it shut off on its own) till i was ~3 blocks from my apt. the engine was rebuilt ~10k miles ago. its a 2k lanos hatch.

Well, I'm not sure on how to change the fuel filter since I have never had to do so but I have had a similar "starting up problem" with my car. Turned out to be the ignition coil. Might wanna check that out. Let me ask you this. Once you finally get it started, you drive it a while, then stop somewhere for a few minutes with the car off, is it hard to get it to start up again?

No, I meant now but I guess you haven't had a chance to drive it if it is as dead as you say. Only reason I asked is because when my ign coil went bad it was hard to start the car every time. With a bad fuel filter I believe it should be easy to start the car a second time after the motor has ran for a few and the stopped for a few.agent smith wrote:nope. i assume you mean when it was running smoothly right?

actually i am more worried about the clanking noice and smoak that you had rather than the rough idling so check your coolant and oil levels and see if their is any leaks, contaminations or anything unusual in them both.
as for idling issues: how about a fast checkup on your ignition and fuel systems? see if you got sparks on all 4 plugs and that the plugs themselves are in good condition, also check to see if the injectors are working fine.
do you have a CEL? indeed if you have one you should scan it right away and get the code so thai i t can help us more in diagnosing this problem.
when was the last time you cleaned up your TB and intake? a cleanup will help in keeping the idling smooth.

the clanking never returned, even tonight when i started up the car. there was no smoke, the white puff i saw was from the thermostat more than likely blowing. it smelled like water, not like oil, or any other fluid.
i clean out my TB monthly with intake cleaner, so i know its clean. i dont wanna mess with the spark plugs, last time i checked for spark i got a nasty jolt.
ive had a CEL since i blew my 2nd ecu. i scanned it when i got home and its still throwing an ECM error code only.
i got an idea, im gonna take a video with my digi cam and upload it to my webserver so you guys can hear what it sounds like when i start it and when it idles. would that be better?

That is an odd sound. It makes that sound and no smoke is coming out of the exhaust? The sound it is making seems like burnt rings or bearings would have to be included in the problem. Is the oil pressure light on when it is running? Please say it isn't.
