hi, i got a 1998 lanos, its all stock. i find the car doesnt go fast lol.. im just trying to find a way to make it perform better,, is there a way? i dont want turbo though.

After making sure the car is in a good state of service - eg oil, oil filter, fuel filter, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, power steering fluid, spark plugs, grippy tyres - I found the best things you can do before going forced induction on the 1.5 for increasing performance is (in order!)
- Higher octane fuel (Excellent idea) - since your in OZ I recommend BP Ultimate 98 Octane (preferred) or Optimax. Running this burns quicker so less kms/tank but you notice the better/cleaner combustion!
- Remove the resonator under the airbox - FREE
- Sounds crazy and get more air into the airbox. http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2884
- Run some 2.5 or 3 inch flex tube to the bottom of the airbox and the hole left from removing the front fog light cover to get a bit of a ram air thing happening - maybe $10AU for some flex tube from Clark Rubber (since your in OZ - check out http://www.teamlanos.com
or any Auto store).
- Change the rear muffler to a straight thru muffler (just back to the joiner flange, you dont have to do the whole catback if you dont want to) 2 inch is good - not too loud. The stock muffler is the main restriction in the exhaust system! Depending on your muffler its probably around $250AU or so with crush bends, $350AU probably for full catback with crush bends and new resonator. You wont notice much difference between crush and mandrels on non turbo...
- K&N Panel Air Filter $100AU for the stock airbox - works way better than the stock item!
- NGK V-Groove Spark Plugs (BP6RE i think is the number) $3-4AU each. These work way better than stock and are way cheaper than the precious metal ones.
- Aftermarket Spark Plug Leads $100AU+ - Im going to recommend the Top Gun 8.8mm Pro Racing Leads. I got them for $100AU and in my opiniong they are the best things since sliced bread. You can spend more but it may be overkill...
- Fuel pressure regulator (you may as well get a rising rate fuel pressure regulator (RRFPR) if you make it this far because you'll no doubt go turbo not long after) - $180AU for a Malpassi 1:1 RRFPR, about another $100AU for a 100psi fuel pressure gauge and cup and $30AU for a length of EFI fuel tube (this stuff is expensive - dont use normal fuel tube for non-EFI as its not up to the pressure!) - Auto store. You dont need to bump up the base fuel pressure level much - stock is about 34psi and i found going up to 37 or 38psi you notice a bit of a pick up - especially powering from off throttle and moving away from the lights. NOTE: due to the Daewoo fuel system you'll either need to get your fuel rail modified or get some custom fittings welded up (save your old fuel filter and cut the ends off and weld them to some hose tube fittings from Pirtek).
At this stage the Lanos should be breathing and pulling alot better.
After this it starts getting real serious. Either headers, cams, port and polish head/manifolds, etc or turbo. I'd go turbo - more bang for the buck and easier to bolt on!
Also I have heard good things about the Daewootech.net Choco Chip - a quality trick for the Air Intake Temp sensor but i haven't tried it...

the ocatne doesn't do anyting, but the detergents do. premium fuel is better cause it's cleaner and lubricates better. not always worth the money though.
