help figuring out a noise

Post by kinkyllama »

Well as you all know i beat the hell out of my car in racing and just cruisen on the street. But last week i decieded to through some thick tires on the car and go offroading. It was the most fun that ive ever had in my car.. and offroading. Ive been going offroading in trucks since i was little but this was much more fun.

Anyways.. the problem. The best way i can desribe it is it sounds like there is a piece of metal rolling around inside the wheels drum... i know there isnt though and its another problem. Its only coming from the left front wheel and it sounds like that "metals rolling around inside the wheel" untill about 22mph.. then you only hear it every few seconds you here a little like ting sounds like metal hitting something and bouncing off. Everything on the car looks normal and i havnt spotted any problems. Any info im missing?

I really wanna figure this out before something happens. lol. I dont want my car to give out trying to pass someone at 90mph on a banked turn.

if i were you...

i would go to a tire shop and have them take the tire off and search for a piece of gravel or perhaps a piece of the schrader valve inside the wheel bouncing around :)

hope that gets it figured out

well if it sounds like metal on metal it might be your dust cover behind your brakes that might be bent in a bit. if it is just push it back out with your hand or something like that. other than that i can't tell you what it could be.

damn... i hate this shit, i almost spent 3 days troubleshooting something like that on my car... i will tell you later what it was.

first try to rule out components that doesn't make the sound so for starters jack the car up at the left front wheel and put the car in gear... better tilt the steering to the left then to the right and see if you can find any objects making the sound or lose parts ort so.

if you found nothing then taker off the wheel and try the test again... if the sound is gone then it is something in the wheel/tire, don't ask me what is wrong with it as i don't have any idea what can make a wheel do that.

anyways if the sound is still their then check the rotor (while spinning) if it touches its guard or if their is something off in the caliper and touching the rotor... don't forget to see youyr drove shaft as well, it could be something more closer to the tranny and has nothing to do with the wheel.

again if nothing could be found then take off the caliper and try the test, no sound means the caliper is touching the rotor... look for shine metal parts where the friction occurs... if nothing could be found remove the caliper bracket and try again.

again if nothing could be found remove the rotor and test the car... it could be the rotor hiting its guard which got bent during off roading or so the sound should go away if you remove it.

if the sound is still their then their is nothing to suspect but the front bearings... although i find that not even remotly related to your problems... i am out of ideas.

as for mi car i had this continous cracking sound in the rear right wheel... i ran through evey trick i know to find this but i couldn't find a thing, every time i remove the wheel and the brakes drum i find nothing wrong... even the sound goes away and it is quite as hell but once i drive it the sound is back

turns out that one of the wheel bolts was hitting the brake shoe spring and making this funny consistant sound  ... don't ask me how the bolt got longer so that it hit the spring 'cause i still couldn't figure that out till now.

Thanks guys! I know it has nothing to do w/ the wheels/tires as i had different ones on over the last weeks. Also my street tires are COMPLETLY bald and i would notice anything wrong w/ them.

Ill get to checking all the things you guys suggested when i install my new rear pads in the next couple days.

thanks guys!

yeah.. i hate these things taht you just cant figure out....

My friend had a noise like that and it was because his wheel lugs were loose and his wheel was wobbling.
