Rusty exhaust... what to do??

Post by MMamdouh »

i noticed that my exhaust piping is starting to get rusty (cheap Egyptian paint job  ) and i was thinking of a fix for that beforte the winter season.

basicly i am planning to:

1- taking off the exhaust
2- sand paper all the old paint and rust
3- paint the whole thing with primer (or whatever this anti rust coat substance is called... it is pale red in color and used to protect bare metal from rust)
4- spray paint the whole thing with silver color
5- put it all back on the car.

i just want to know if that primer will stand the heat or is it going to burn or so... currently i have no other alternatives than this senario and i am just worred of the primer resistance to heat.

i am not going to paint the header or the down pipe... just from the mid exhaust box all the way to the end so i suppose their is not that much heat to worry about... right?

need your advice guys.

it's gonna be HOT...

the evo fusion exhaust has melted my bumper around where it sticks out

i dunno if you'd be ablt to get some, but they make Barbeque paint that is rated for 1200 degrees. it requires no priming and sticks to bare metal fine. my cai is painted in it, as is my heat shield. see if you can get some of that.

ok i will see to that but what if i can't... is the primer idea bad??... i have no problem if it is going to last just for a season or two before it deteriorates.

I would think a little more than that. I dont know what N/A engines run but turbo engines exhaust temps run normally at 1300 degrees.

I have some 1300degree barbeque paint on my calipers and works well.. its kinda a flat black.. or just a shade away from black. Its a little more expensive the regular spraiy paint but it would work well

if it's only the mid-pipe back, i would think 500 to be alright.

engine paint is the way to go, or bbq paint

Yeah but i think it might be close. I know i could easily grill a hamburger on my exhaust. lol.

Id go with bbq paint over engine paint.. engine paints is overpriced

yeah, i'd say bbq too, but engine paint may be the best you can do in egypt.

regular spray paint and rust inhibitor will flake off the first time you drive

that is a real problem... the engine or bbq paint is very rare if it is available at all here

if that is the case then is it woth the effort to do this job or should i leave the exhaust as it is?

Even if you sand it off... will it just come right back? or will the at least damper the rusting?

that is the trick with rust... its kinda like cancer if you don't remove it all it will just come back and i intend to remove it all which will take lot of effort but i don't wanna spend hours doing that then find out that the exhaust rusted again because my primer was not good enought.

i know it is kinda hard decision but i have to decide carefully.

well if you have access to a blow torch or something similar i heard you can burn off the rust. not sure if your supposed to do this after or before sanding it down or if you have to sand it at all. just don't turn up the heat where its a jet flame but just enough to where it still looks like a flame. just a thought really.

how can i burn rust?? :?

rust is already an iron oxide so burning it won't do any thing, you can however use a blow torch to loosen rusty bolts or so... the heat makes the iron expand and break the rust particles that is causing the bolt to sieze.

also a mild flame is used to burn off old paint specialy if it got too much stock underneath it.

heat makes bare iron more volunrable to rust as heat makes it more chemically acvtive and if it is hot and bare it will rust fast... ever wondred why your exhaust manifold is too rusty?

i guess in my case the sand paper is the most sutable way to remove the rust.
