So my i think ive narrowed down this coolant leak to the water pump. Ive decided im going to replace the water pump anyways and just need to know how to go about it on the 1.5 and if i need to buy anything other than the water pump itself and the seal to complete the job. From what i can find it looks to not be a belt driven one?
Bit of a silly question but are there performance water pumps i should be looking at and what makes them 'performance'?

it is always recommended to replace the water pump along with your timing belt becaus basicly replacing any of the two parts requires almost the same amount of work.
since you are doing it the other way arround then the suggestion will be to replace thew timing belt and tensioner while you are in the process.
their is a how to for replacong a timing belt on a 1.6 DOHC... it can guid you through the water pump job as the engines are only different at the cam gears and all.
if you decided to throw in a timing belt and tensioner - and i recommend that - then the crank shaft is aligned just as discribed in the 1.6 DOHC belt replacment article and for your single cam gear you have to align the notch on it with the notch on the top of the plastic cam cover.

That water pump may be a bitch to get out. Be prepared to destrou it if needs be. I removed mine the other day and I don't think there's any way I could have gotten it off if the engine was still in the car! I had to bang on the pulley with a hammer until it finally started to give way!

Yeah thats what i thought. I was assessing the job, checking stuff and thought thats something for the well trusted/experienced workshop to do Generally if its timing belts i'll let the shop do it.
And luckily so! They spent 4.5hrs on it and when i saw the pump that they gave back to me - it was so gone in comparison to the new one. there was so much shaft play, and the spining was noisy and it didnt spin smoothly - it was clunky/clicky. Not to mention that poor seal! I was surprised it was still working at all
Definetly worth getting it done!
