New side mirrors, areo

Post by kinkyllama »

Ive been thinking about putting new more areo friendly mirrors on my car. First off what would it take? What are the mirrors probably held on with?

2nd, it doesnt sounds like side mirrors would make much of a different in areo dynamics.. but i think they will. There is some wind noise coming off the mirrors at 100mph.. and 120 you can hear it really well.. its very loud. I wont do it till sometime after i do the front airdam/splitter and mount my new carbon wing.. plus then i can tell you what it sounds like at 140! muwahah!

Anyways, do you guys thing it will make much of a difference? I think i might see an extra .5mph on the track, maybe? .. it makes a difference. Plus.. after all my plans for turbo/suspension/areo *which will be done by the years end* im gonna do some things to make my car look a little better.

i have no idea what effect the mirrors got on areo dynamics but i did something that could help you althoug i did it for a totally different reason

i always drive with both my side mirrors folded (i.e. closed or whatever the expression is for not putting them in the regular position for viewing rear objects) and i have subistituted both by using a "panoramic" center mirror that mounts on top of the OEM middle view mirror inside the car... this mirror is convex and allows you to see a really wide area all arround you that you won't need them side mirrors any more.

i did that 'cause pedistrians here are so stupid and walk all over the streets and lots of times the side mirror gets banged in by the ass holes walking in the street and i didn't want it to break... also i tend to squeez the Woo in between cars on the highway and some times side mirrors collide with the mirrors of the other cars.

you can do the same and get this panoramic mid view mirror and keep your side mirrors folded (closed) for better areo or even remove them for better weight too.

my 2 cents.

I dont really really wanna get rid of my mirrors at all. You need all you can get on the track sometimes.. especialy if there is a formula car on the track (for wahtever reason) cuz there harder than hell to see.

All the windows.. in a race you have to have the front two windows ddown. Now i think it might be better to have all four. Think about it for a second though. Cuz when i drive w/o i put all 4 windows down cuz it flows better. With just the front two down sometimes it gets alot of pressure built up and has random winds all over the place.

Driving with your windows down is more innefficeint than people let on. I read an article that says if you drive with your windows down @ 40 MPH you are using more gas than if you are driving 40 MPH with the AC on. It is true for my car at least because when I'm accelerating it takes more time to got from 90-100 with windows down than with windows up. With windows up 90-100 passes in a blur. The best thing for rally/autocross cars is a roof scoop to allow clean cool air in without sacrificing aerodynamics.

As for the aero mirrors, I doubt that they do much for aerodynamics one way or the other. If you think otherwise, simply take them off or fold them back and go out on the highway and see if there is any improvement. If not, it isn't worth the effort.

I know.. 40mph.. is alittle low though. Id say more like 60+.. at least with my car.. with my moms 40 sounds right.

Oh and you HAVE to have your front windows down on the track.. its a safty thing.. window visors to deflect the wind would be good.. but i dont like the looks of them.

there is a pressure difference at any speed...

around 60 is when you'd feel it...

a NASCAR would go well over 200mph if they had real windows

it's roughly a 10% loss of power (according to topgear)

to be perfectly honest, i don't think the mirrors make taht big a deal. all the le mans cars have em and they aren't any different than their road version cousins. the 300hp touring cars go faster than the 1000hp supras on a track... just food for thought
