Lanos fuel gauge not working

I have a problem with the fuel gauge not working on my Lanos 1.4SE. Most of the time the gauge does not work but every so often it will decide to work for a short time. Luckily the low fuel warning light works so at least I have some indication when it is low. My local mechanic replaced the sender unit in the tank and also the entire clock instrument panel from a low mileage Lanos that he was breaking for spares but unfortunately it didn't make any difference. When I get in the car after it has stood for a while I do notice that the fuel gauge has risen slightly to just above the letter E (Empty mark) but as soon as I turn on the ignition the needle will drop to zero. Any ideas welcome.

I had a similar problem too. It turned out to be a faulty ground in the engine compartment. Check to see that the Negative wire from the battery to the body is attached and clean. Sand away some of the paint on the body where the ground is to see if it helps. Maybe try going with some bigger gauge wires to see if the gauge fixes.

It might also be a loose fuse that only makes contact intermittently.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've checked all fuses and connections but will try adding another earth lead from the battery to chassis / engine block and see what that does.

I have the same problem with the fuel gauge.

The fuel gauge work well until I use the heater fan. When the fan is at position 2 or more the fuel gauge go down 1 or 2 minutes later.

I would like to fix this problem. I will check the battery ground.

I will let you know the result.

If you have other suggestions...

I removed the dash today and check for a ground starting from the fuel gauge. I didn't find a black wire connected to the car's body. All the wires were taped together.

I cleaned the ground and the connection spot on the body but the fuel gauge probleme continue.

Any suggestions

Yeah, its not grounded directly to the gauge, it is the main battery ground in the engine compartment. If it is corroded or lose, then this will continue.

However, it may also be the resistor card in the fuel pump that is faulty, if it is that, it is $400 for a new pump if you want the gauge to work.

same here i have the same situation , i went to the dealer to check and they said it is a faulty sending unit and i have to replace the fuel pump and i replaceded it worked for 1 month and the same problem backed again
