Post by Magneto »

Hi,
I am from Malaysia, over here i got a Optra 1.8 LT (1.8 d-tec engine).
I would like to add in a turbo.
Can anyone provide me a guide as to how to do this and where to buy all the stuffs?

Appreciate some pointers here

Tom@ 360 Dynamics has kits for the 1.8L

How much power you want is directly related to cost.

As you make more power the cost of the required parts goes up exponentially.

I could see a 1.8L making 400hp for around $10,000 USD but that would require some real serious work.

What is required?

Post by Magneto »

Hi,
Ok I just need around 40-50 more bhp than the standard 1.8 LT that i have now.
Hmm budget wise, depends. I hope dynamics360 (they didnt reply my mail) can let me know how to proceed.
Few questions :-
- can the current auto gearbox support the new horse power?
- the current rods and piston wont work for turbo right? I mean the compression ratio is non turbo built.
I am ready to spend say around USD 3-4k.

heres the link for the turbo kits. not sure about shipping but for the price range you have to spend should be more than enough to get the whole kit. also make sure to get MLS headgasket (if Tom has it for the 1.8l) just for an extra precaution. well when Tom hits you up he'll be able to recommend everything you'll need.

oh and as for the pistons and rods. i don't know too much but if your only looking for about 40-50 extra ponies i believe about 6 psi of boost should be enough for that and your stock internals can handle that much. you really don't need to change internals unless you plan on goin over like 8 or 9 psi of boost constantly.

Turbo

Post by Magneto »

Hi,

Thanks for the link.

ACtually i am a real noob when it comes to turbo.
I tot that pic is just the manifold, how about the turbine itself? and how do we get put them all together?

What do i need actually??

- the turbo manifold
- turbine
- simple elec meter to monitor (Apexi AFC, over here it cost USD 100 only)

anything else?
Yup if .6 boost is all that is needed to get the 40-50bhp, i would be happy. No change of rods needed?

well i know on that link that Tom has a turbo kit with mostly everything for about $1200 USD. just look at the kit for the 1.6l and it'll list everything that comes with it. now the pic you saw was a cast iron turbo-mani. well try to pm Tom at 360dynamics again or see if he'll respond to this thread because he'll be able to tell you everything you need to know. but i highly doubt you would have to change rods or any internals to just run 6psi.

With an exhaust, and the UD pulley.. at about 6-7psi with 91octane fuel you should be able to make 185whp. No change of rods or any of that needed.. although i would highly recommend putting ARP bolts in there

This shouldn't be too hard to do on stock internals.

Tom is extreemly sick right now.... he probably won't be answering too many emails or PM's right now.... last night he went home.... slept for 2hrs, got up and ate some supper and went back to bed for the rest of the night.

Yes.... the tranny should be ok.... and I think the clutch might be ok.... it's hard to say.... 50 to 60 hp more would proably burn it out fairly quickly.
Magneto wrote: the current rods and piston wont work for turbo right? I mean the compression ratio is non turbo built.
I'd suggest that you simply install a thicker head gasket to lower the compression a little but this might cause issues with the Camshaft timing.

Tom's trying to work on some aftermarket adjustable cam gears but there are a few issues that have to be worked out before he will know if they will work or not.

In case you didn't know.... when you install a thicker gasket it moves the cam position slightly..... normally on something like a Civic you just install some adjustable cam gears and your all fixed up.

I'm not saying that you would have a problem if you didn't install adjustable cam gears..... I don't know how much room there is to play with on these engines (won't know until adjustable cam gears are installed on my engine and we fool around with it )

W/ 40-50 hp above stock you can keep the stock clutch but like Chris said it will burn out a little quicker
