Milege counter

Post by blackielaw »

I'm installing a new cluster on my Lanos, and since its new the milege counter reads 9999999. Is there any way to change the 999999 into 41733 which is the real milege count? I opened up the clauser and found the little knobs behind the numbers but they cant be turned manually apparently

Well, it is possible, but it takes a little work and I don't think it is worth it.

You have to take off the needle and the plastic face held by screws. Then you will see the entire mechanism with all the numbers. There is a gear and you can do it manually, but going from 999999 to 40000 all by one would take a long time, so you can actually pull back the metal clip that prevents the odometer from being changed manually and change the mileage by 10000 intervals and get to 40000 quickly. I have done it and it works, I bought a used cluster and got it down to 000000, but I had to take apart the speedometer for parts so I didn't commit fraud  .

Truthfully, it would be smarter to put either your old speedo in, or just write down the mileage you have and go back to a 0 mile Lanos.

Tried putting the old speedo in the new cluster but it doesn't fit! Shape and hole positions are completely different. I don't want my new cluster to start at 9999999 so I must find a way of changing those numbers in someway or another

Usually, the "official" way of doing something like this in Canada is as follow:
- you go to any certified mechanic and inform that you are changing the cluster
- they issue a sticker, which is applied to the car, and informs that at so many kilometers cluster has been replaced with a new one, with mileage of XXXXXKM.

Changed the number the tough way. Disassembled the speedo and turned the numbers manually carefully until I got my current mileage. Put everything in place and everything seems to be working nice
