ported and un ported, it really depends on what you want over all, more db or how low you want it to go. give the deminsions for your trunk and how loud and how low you want it to go, I will have my buddy use his program that will caculate the best box for the application. he has 1 12 peavy black widow driver(from a pa) that can handle 1000 watts rms  and it is in a sealed box in the trunk of his stratus and we used this test tone cd and the thing replicated 25 hz at about 30db roughly, basically that car rumbled and everything inside of it was shaking, kinda like getting a bass massage.

When a box is designed and built specifically to a subwoofer, ported and tuned will always out perform sealed in SQ or SPL depending on what the box is tuned for.
A well made box can have an interchangable port so you can switch between getting really loud (SPL) or really good sound quality (SQ).

A sealed box is the easiest to make and the easiest way to have a very flat response curve, but it will not get as loud given equal wattage as a ported box.

If you have the room in your car and have the ability to PROPERLY design a box for a specific subwoofer (every subwoofer requires a different box), than do so; you will be very happy with the end results.

One of my dads friends made a living making boxs so ill have him make it for free

I have a question.. i dont have my backseats in awhmore cuz i have so many races coming up i thought id leave them out.. but my sub doesnt seam as loud as when it was in the truck. I could see how this makes sense cuz in the trunk its almost like a tunnel. Any thoughts?

Well low end take a longer time to develope than highs and mids do. ex 100hz at 67 degree F takes about 10 ft to develope as a 1khz will only take a 1 ft. So if you moved your subs right up to where the back seat is you are giving the bass enough time to actually produce the waveform before it hits you thus resulting in a weaker sounding bass. So with that, just put them back to where they used to be in the trunk with out the back seats.

Okay someone recommend an amp and one 12" sub for under $350.

My last sub is starting to really fall apart now. I dont even wanna spend $350 really. As long as the sub sounds alot better than my current 150rms 10inch in a pre-fab box. The new sub would be in ported box made for the sub, amp, and car. So as long as the new setup sounds much better than my old one. The price im willing to spend doesnt include the box

how big is the amp? if the amp isn't that big then $350 isn't worth it for any sub thats used. especially with out a box.

well if your amp is still good then just get a sub and box then. that should only cost you like $250 for a good sub and box then. or you can always go to ebay and spen much less for them. like i know you can get two 12's for like $150 or so not sure if its with a box but it would be for kicker solarbaric 12's maybe not the newest but still damn good.

Can someone give me a quick how-to build a PORTED sub box.. i know the basics but not sure how ported boxs work. Im gonna be buying the 12" tempest soon. My Dad owns a lumber business so basicly i can get ANY kinda hardwood in alot of sizes. I can also get things lamenated (sp)... would that be better? i know it'd make it stronger.

Between me and my brother i probably have every single power tool imaginable food wood work

thanks guys

Get the cubic air volume requirements as specified by the tech sheet for the Tempest, then use WinISD to plug in the information and it will calculate the port size and length for you.

www.linearteam.org/winisd.html

This is an excellent program for box design, and the Tempest is already one of the listed subs with it's parameters included with the program.
