Shopping for new subs... sad day today...

Post by scarr »

Well it seems that after 6 years of constant everyday use, my 2 10s have finally decided they've had enough. At least one of them did.

I'm cruising down the highway today, blasting music like I always do and all of a sudden I notice my bass levels drop off tremendously. I get home and open the trunk, and find that the entire cone of one of my 10s is sitting in the floor completely blown off the voice coil. It tore through the rubber all the way around the outside and separated the cone from that ribbed piece that attaches it to the voice coil.

Anyways, I've got an Audiobahn 8002T amp, and I'm wondering if it would power a pair of these http://www.hawkelectronics.com/details2 ... LPSWR1021D nicely.

I've got a sealed box at the moment but I've got a friend that makes boxes so if I need a different box thats not a problem. Any information would be really helpful.

If you are getting the dual 4 ohm coil version of that sub, it will work perfectly when you connect the two 4 ohm coils in parallell to yield a 2 ohm impedence load.

The Subwoofer:
Alpine SWR-1042D
dual 4-ohm voice coils
frequency response: 26-600 Hz
power handling: 200-500 watts RMS

The amp:
400 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms

So yes, that amp will power those subs very well. The Alpine Type R subs have had good reviews, too, although I have never personally heard them.

What about boxes? I was thinking of having a friend custom build 2 single 10" boxes to go in each rear corner of my trunk to free up space in the actual trunk.

I'm going to have some pics of my current box sometime tonight just to give you an idea of what I'm currently using.

Wouldn't getting the dual 2ohm coil version be better and then wiring each in parallel to yield 1ohm per sub and then running both subs bridged to the amp. The specifications on the amp show 800x1 @ 4ohms, wouldn't it yield a higher output wattage if it was run that way?

Since the specifications on the amp show a 200x2 @ 4ohms yet a 400x2 @ 2ohms, so the 800x1 @ 4ohms would (based on those numbers, giving it a 2x wattage increase) would put it in the range of ~1200x1 @ 2ohms.

Hm.... well putting it that way would probably cause the amp to put out more power than the subs could handle..

I don't know, these are just questions that I want to get answered before I buy them.

I installed 2 alpine type-e 12s in a friends car powered by a kenwood KAC-7201 that hits at least twice as hard as my 2 audiobahn 10s did. And his system is in the trunk of his 2 door civic.... Which is why I planned on going Alpine for subs.

From what I have read, that amp is not 2 or 1 ohm stable when bridged mono.
When an amp is connected with too low a load, it will overheat and it could be damaged.

As for the boxes, as long as they have the correct internal air volume and are made of a strong, resonantly dead material.
