Lanos Help
Hows it going, I'm new to the boards and recently picked up a 2001 daewoo lanos 2 dr. I picked it up cheap because the timing belt broke. I know i can tear everything off and replcae the valves if the heads aren't screwed up. I was wondering what my other options are. Some guys have talked about engine swaps, some that include turbos. I was wondering if you could list them. Maybe make a sticky or something for others that has engine codes engine information, what swaps into what, prices, modification requirements that sort of thing. Also i live in the U.S. and it is a U.S. model. Thanks
P.S. Not sure whether to heavily modify it or fix it up and sell it exploring all options. I'm pretty handy with tools and can do most of the engine work myself.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
With regards to the belt, it is the weak point of the engine design. We currently have a post in our section regarding Lanos timing belts - let us know if this is of interest of you.
Also, if the timing belt broke, you may have to replace at least 8 valves..

Welcome to the fold my friend. You will no doubt find that Daewoos aren't as bad as people make them out to be. They aren't Lexus quality but let's be serious, neither are BMWs.
To answer your question, there are a few engines that are available that will fit. The engine from the Suzuki Forenza will fit. That's because it's related to the 1.6L that's already in the Lanos. Seeing that it may be difficult to find a Forenza that's beaing scrapped, you can go for an older Daewoo. Engines from the Nubira (2.0) and the Leganza (2.2) will fit. Bear in mind that there seems to be a difference between the power steering pump on the 1.6 and the 2.0 so some conversion may need to be done to the piping. As AcingTeam said, the 1.8 and 2.0 turbo engines from old Pontiac cars do fit if you can find one in good order. If you have resources in Europe then you can indulge even further. European Opels and Vauxhalls came with a 2.0 16v turbo unit that fits as well. There are guys over there that routinely put the 2.5 24v V6 in Vauxhall /Opel Astras (the Lanos is based on the Astra) so there's another possibility.
Good luck bro.

Go for the C20GET!!!!!
Nobody's done one yet and they are by far the cheapest and easiest swap in my opinion.
I picked mine up by simply purchasing a fully functional 87 Sunbird GT Turbo for $1000 CDN ( which was about $640 USD at the time of purchase)
It was great.... I got everything I needed..... but I never even got started on the project.... I had the engine out and I was ready to slap in my Lanos when a certain someone from this board convinced me to come out for a test drive of a 2004 Optra 5 ( Suzuki Reno)
Needless to say.... I sold the Lanos the next day and bought a fully loaded Optra 5.
I picked up a C20NE (naturally aspirated 2.0L 8V) really cheap and the plan was to drop it into the sunbird and sell the car for close to what I payed for it.

You will need to pick up an engine mount from an early nineties Pontiac Lemans which had the 2.0L 8V C20NE
Since the early nineties Lemans is the exact chassis that the Lanos was built on this engine mount will be the correct size for a C20GET Lanos swap.
From there it's a simple drop in..... the only thing that can get a little scary for guys is converting the electrical system to use the C20GET ECU.
I think that there were some newer C20GET's that had more power and a Distributorless Ignition System ( 1991????)
This would be the ideal engine to grab in my opinion..... many C20GET engines are running in the two hundred to three hundred wheel horsepower levels.
One fellow has a Sunbird that's running into the 11's on the quarter mile track.... and it's completely stock.
Just imagine this same engine in a Lanos!!!!!
I think the only modifications were a larger turbo, upgraded injectors (I think he added an extra one as well ) and a few modifications to make the ECU happy ( it doesn't like to see more than 12psi..... so you need to clamp the map sensor or set up a vacuum bleed if you want more boost)

Thanks For the help guys! , I'll post some pics soon. Started taking off the block haven't got it down to the valves yet. For some reason i'm leaking oil out of one of the holes in the side of the block near the headers not really sure what they are will post picks later. I have some friends in europe so a 2.5l 24v v6 sounds good to me. Although if i could get it to run 11's with a sunbird engine in stock form sounds good to me. I'll do some checking to see how much i could get one for. Shipping from canada to fl would be expensive maybe if u give it to me for free, ill drive up thier haha.

There are no online shop manuals for the Lanos at this time. I say again, at THIS time. A few years ago when I attempted me turbo project there was NOTHING on the net. No parts manual, no wiring diagram, NOTHING. Now we have those. Perhaps someone somewhere is workign on it as we speak with a pretty slow scanner. Until then, however you have a little chance. The relationship to Vauxhall Astras is striking and seeing that Astras are mainstays of European motordom, we're in luck. Dig this:
Astra Shop Manual
The 1.6L 16v isn't the same 1.6L 16v that's in the Lanos however. That engine is based on the small block engine. The Lanos' is based on the big block engines (1.8L, 2.0L and 2.2L). Earlier Astra 1.6's were based on the big block but for some reason GM decided to do something different. Anyway, when you peruse the manual do so with the 1.8 or 2.0 instructions, it's a safer bet.
A VERY good resource for information on all sorts of Vauxhall conversions and parts supply etc is MigWeb. They helped me a lot when I was doing my research. Good blokes over there and they're willing to help.
Good luck.
