Daewoo Nubira Temp Gauge

Recently my temp gauge has been fluctuating rapidly between mid temp to beyond the Red Hot mark. The radiator is full and dosnt seem to be overheating when ive stopped and checked.
Could i just have a faulty gauge?
Any thoughts appreciated.

sounds like a messed up thermostat doesn't it?

nope... a faulty thermostate can't cause rappind fluctuations... this is an electrical problem with your temp. sensor or your gauge itself.

if the fluctuation in gauge readings is associated with cooling fan operation (the fans kick in when the gauge goes too high) then it is a bad temp. sensor if not then it is just your gauge.

mmamdouh, thanx for your help.
With either of your two explantions would it be ok to carry on driving and ignore the gauge or could i be causing more problems?

To me it sounds as either faulty sensor, or loose/corroded wire connector.

The Suzuki X-90 I used to have had a loose and slightly corroded connecter on the sensor and it was making the needle jump as you describe.

I pulled the connecter off, cleaned the end of the sensor and the connecter on the end of the wire with a small (toothbrush sized) wire brush, reconnected it and then brushed on some liquid electrical tape.

After that, the problem never happened again.

with both my explanations you got nothing wrong with the engine and you can drive your car as usual.

the problem is if you struck problems that cause engine overheating, the engine will let you know it has too much heat by other means like smoaking, stalling or even catching fire... by then it will be too late to do anything about it and your engine will be toast... but that if you did have a problem.

in much shorter version... you CAN drive the car normally but IT IS HIGLY NOT RECOMMENDED TO DO SO.
