i used to hear that oil overfill causes too much oil beeing thrown on the cyl. walls and makes it hard for the oil piston rings to remove it all so some oil finds its way to the combustion chamber... not really sure of that.

if this is the case then setting the oil to the correct level should cure the problem... you have to wait till all the extra oil in the chamber is burned to see no more oil in the exhaust... cleaning the spark plugs might help.

I don't think overfilling it with oil can do permanent damage. On my Honda, it takes 3.4 quarts of oil and I once absent mindedly put in four because I left an oil bottle draining as I got a cell phone call. A little extra won't do any damage or harm the performance of the engine, but it can get dangerous if you fill a 3.4 quart engine with say 5 quarts or if you take the dipstick out and the oil level is like an inch above max. I'd worry about not putting enough oil.

How much extra did he put in anyway?

Too much oil will cause a high oil pressure situation inside the engine. Invariably this puts strain on every oil seal and will ultimately result in the weakest being blown and so on. Yes indeed there can be situations where there is excessive oil seeping past the rings. Another problem is excessive oil getting into the breather hose and consequently on into the intake. But permanent damage? Unlikely. Everything that can possibly be hurt is easily replaced.

Permanent damage? No. Damage to your wallet? Yes. Overfilling will cause loss of power and loss of fuel economy. I've driven a car that was overfilled with engine oil before and it is sluggish like a snail. After an oil change with the correct level of oil put into it, the performance improved drastically.

yea tis sluggish off the mark but normal once it gets goin.he had too much oil for like 3 days. he filled up quite a bit. but changed the filter atthe same time. i dont no if this changes anything, so should he take it easy on the engine, will this lower the oil pressure

Ah yes, a great example! Overfilling wil cause foaming and offers very little lubrication. As a result, the engine can and will heat up due to excessive friction. Now with the example of the GTO which caught fire........ That is hell a lot of friction!
