I think I might have found something! Woo turbo internals...

Post by Big P »

I did some searching around today and I found this.....
Image

This is a Z20LET found in the UK. I am pretty sure that it is a Daewoo engine that came from the FACTORY with a turbo that puts out a nice 12PSI. Anyway, I emailed the guys at the site on finding out some more information about the internals and camshaft specs. I figured that for those of us who want to run turbo motors that need forged internals shouldn't have to spend tons of money on custom, one off pieces when there are factory parts designed to handle the load and are available now. And hopefully the cams are different with the right lift, duration, and lobe seperation angles for a turbo application. This will help to keep more of the power that you are making with a turbo instead of using the N/A Daewoo cams. I am just waiting on them to e mail me back with any info. And here is their website...

well it doesn't look like any daewoo engine i've seen before. it might say ecotec but who knows maybe we'll get lucky. hopefully they can supply you with detailed measurements and specs. good find though man.

Well, here is a cutaway view of the Z20LET engine. I just disassembled my T22SED last week, and the resemblance is astonishing. Let's see if it will load....

Image

Just look at the timing cover, and where the oil fitler is in relation to the crank pulley. Heck look at the crank pulley and then tell me that you don't think there is any similarities....

From the emblem on the cam cover, that is actually a Vauxhall engine, but you are right, it is in the same family as the Opel/Daewoo engines and may actually be quite similar (not to say identical) to the Daewoo 2.0L. A bunch of engines in this family were factory turbo charged, so finding parts is easy, and some may be interchangeable with our engines. But that is comman knowledge, and like some of the moderators said, parts for the Daewoo 2.0L are readily available and easy to find overseas, just a little pricey.

right, i live in the uk, and i can shed some light on this.

a while ago the car company called VAUXHALL / OPEL (euro name) started selling cars, they went on to sell ASTRA's, the MK2 astra was released around 1988 yes, thats 17years ago. this is what the sporty version looked like

Image

then a few years later, they changed the look, and stop producing the mk2.

well, around 1997 (possibly a bit earlier) DAEWOO started producing cars, of which was the NEXIA. it is actully a mk2 astra, with a few moddifications to the body, and some other refinemements. compare the pics (near identical other than daewoo badges)

Image

now, its the exact same car, but with a few changes. then along came the lanos, which if im right, still has the same frame as the astra/nexia, but with a huge change to the exterior look of the car. this can be seen in things like the engine, when i recently had a cam belt change, it was near identical as the mk2 astra 1.6 16v, except for a tensioner in a slightly different place. the suspension is near identical.

anyway, reason for all this is, vauxhall produced a variety of engines, include a 2.0, and 2.0 turbo. commanly know as RED TOPS. now they are very popular in the uk, and used in lots ov engine transplants, for things like ASTRA's, NOVAS and CORSA's. they put these huge engines in small cars, and its just silly how fast they are. but basicly, these engines were in an astra and calibra's. and i have been told, that without to much effort, you can fit a 2.0 or 2.0 turbo into a lanos.

but basicly, most daewoos/engines are vauxhall ones, i belive they bought the rights to produce them, and did so. here are some pics of different engines, in other vauxhalls (note, this cars are sooo small, but there is loads ov them with 2.0 conversions)

Image

Image

now, the 2.0 turbo (second pic) can be heavily moddified, and a friend (owner of car pictured) has got 308 bhp from it! now thats just stupid amounts.

sorry if info seems a bit random, but basicly, they are near identical engines, and if them 2.0s got in a car tiny car like a corsa or nova, they will easily fit in a lanos...il get some more info soon.

Do you have any links on conversion sites for this particular engine into a lanos. Also any idea of price for one of these engines or even like a half cut kind of thing?

I believe that some of these engines can drop in directly into a Lanos onto the mounts and bolt up to the transmission with no problem. However in the transmission you would need a beefier clutch to handle more of the power.

If you live in Europe these engines are readily available and not too pricey, but if you live in America or Australia, shipping these engines across the high seas wouldn't be worth it unless you were building a full race car and were sponsored, cause engine price + shipping + installation would be somewhere around $10,000. Otherwise, just opt for a turbo and save five grand.

right, as said, unless your in europe, dont bother thinking about it.

i belive you may need to make an additional engine mount, and youll also need to get upgraded/custom driveshafts, and a new clutch, gearbox, exhaust wiring loom etc etc etc

its long job, and uk price would be around ?2000+ having looked into it recently...will find out more soon

are there any readily availableforced induction parts for the lanos? Like forged pistons, rods & cam.
If i was to go turbo on the lanos it would need a new ecu as it doesnt seem that people can retune the stock ecu? I'm not sure what to choose for a lanos as piggyback or complete new ecu. ecu i have heard of being good but being used in different cars are Wolf 3D v4 with handset, EMS stinger, Haltech. Autronic is way too pricey though.

Id like to get 180kw+ at the wheels. Is this possible with stock internals on 1.5sohc or does it require forged items?

I think the best thing would probably be convert to turbo with basic setup. Pick up a 1.5 sohc from a wreckers and build a new engine over time with good custom cam + forgies + custom intake manifold.

Just one question on a different topic. Would it be worth putting in a custom intake manifold on stock n/a sohc. Basically make the plenum chamber larger then what it currently is and use a bigger TB ?

stock internals in a 1.5 sohc could probably only handle 4 to 5 pounds of boost, so 180kw at the wheels may be a bit adventurous

as for an ECU go with a mega-squirt... they are relatively cheap and tuning is easy as pie (granted you have a dyno)

Ah good old Megasquirt. When it came out and it made news in the forums everywhere, people thought it was some porn movie. This thing has the best bang for buck. MS2 looks pretty awesome in its design. I wait in anticipation for a first look at UMS.

:D Well.... the Z20LET and a dozen other Opel engines are compatable.... this isn't really "new" news.

The C20LET is a better "organ donor" ........ both Tom and I are using C20LET connecting rods for our T20SED and U20SED turbo engines.

I'm using forged JE pistons and Tom's using the factory forged C20LET pistons.

The C20LET compression is 8.5:1 where as the Z20LET is 8.8:1

The Z20LET has an integrated turbo inside the exhaust manifold which isn't the "ideal" setup..... a cast or tubular manifold will make more power and be more efficent.

Personally.... I'd stick with the C20LET stuff..... it's much cheaper and the "breaking point" of all the components are well known.
