New Hemp Speaker
Hey everyone I have this guy in my local area that produces Hemp speakers, thats right Hemp. It's more durable than paper and has more movement than kevlar due to its unique strands and make up of the fibers. He has just started making runs of home and car aduio speakers, right now he only does guitar cab stuff, but hopefully tommorow he will bring me down a set of 10's that are a prototype to test out in my car. When I asked him how much do they handle, he simply replied you can't blow these.
I well let you all know how it goes.

So if you get pulled over, would it be considered possession of marijuana?
Better hope a drug dog doesn't sniff your car. LOL

Actually, I think it was JVC, or Sony, or some other popular audio brand that made wood membrane speakers because wood has much better sound transfering abilities than anything synthetic they could produce. Only problem is that the wood tended to dry out and crack within a few weeks, so they ended up applying some chemical that sushi chefs used to keep sea weed soft while they wrapped fish in it. It ended up working and now they started marketing wood speaker home audio.
Only problem is that it was expensive as the devil.

Seriously, wiring 2 home speakers in parallel would make them work as 4 ohm speakers? Would the quality be the same? Would you have to use an amp? I know it sounds super super ghetto but I have 2 Fisher Speaker boxes with 3 speakers each, containing 8" subwoofers that are damn near new, and when turned up via the Sony system they shake the pictures off of the walls. I was thinking of ghetto-fashioning a subwoofer system for "special occasions" to use in my car because a permanent system wouldn't be practical for my uses, I drive alot and need the trunk space. I hadn't even though of wiring them in parallel to yeild a system.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:That's easily taken care of:

If you want, you can wire four 8 ohm speakers in paralel to yield a 2 ohm load; that way you can feed them some real power.
OZ, would this be possible via 2 8 ohm subwoofers in an enclosure wired in parallel and an amp? What would I need to make this ultra-ghetto system work? Is it even possible or worth the MDF needed to build it?

Wiring speakers in series or parallel is not ghetto at all. It is a normal and commonly used technique.
Changing the ohm load by changing the wiring configuration is completely acceptable.
This is EXACLY why there are speakers with 2 or more voice coils available: to change the ohm load that the amplifier will see.
Example: a subwoofer with dual 2 ohm coils can be wired in parallel to yield a 1 ohm load, or it can be wired in series to yeild a 4 ohm load.
2 coils in a single speakers is seen by an amplifier EXACTLY the same way two subwoofers with 1 coil each are seen when wired together.
2 coils, weather in one speaker or in two seperate speakers will result in the same ohm load when wired the same way.
In fact, many people specifically wire multiple speakers together to get more air volume moving by having double the speaker surface area in motion. With this set up, the amp still sees the same ohm load, but you get more volume output (higher dBs) from the same power consumed by the speakers.
Just think, if you have 1 speaker with two 8 ohm coils and it's total power handling is (example) 200 watts RMS when the coils are wired together in parallel, you have that 200 watts from the amplifier going into 1 speaker.
If you have 2 single coil speakers, each at 8 ohms, wired in parallel, each speaker capable of 100 watts RMS, you then have 2 speakers together, seen by the amplifier as a single 4 ohm load at 200 watts RMS. This yields the same power handling as the 1 speaker, yet you have twice the moving speaker surface area, which will result in higher volume output.
Again, wiring 2 or more speakers together to result in a desired impedence load is not at all ghetto.

Cool, I was just thinking ghetto since they are home speakers in a Daewoo, not the wiring, that is actually good news. I guess the plan is a go.
Do you think to wire two 8 Ohm Subwoofers with something like 100 watts RMS each, do I need an amplifier or can I just hook them up to an aftermarket head unit. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to get this knocked out by the end of summer.

Oz you should make a Audio/electronics course like they did with the "Electronics" course.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:Wiring speakers in series or parallel is not ghetto at all. It is a normal and commonly used technique.
