Suzuki ECU vs Optra ECU

Well..... I think there is zero difference between the Suzuki and Optra ECU.

Swaping them out made next to no difference.... at about 6000RPM the Suzuki ECU made 2whp more power but it was just a small area so it might have been nothing.

One thing I did notice very quickly was that the fuel cut comes in at 6250 RPM on the Suzuki Forenza ECU (auto tranny) where as my Optra 5 has a 6500RPM limit.

Perhaps Suzuki rated theirs different based upon their own testing.

Who knows.... but the dyno doesn't lie.

So... who's right according to the dyno?

GM Optra @ 119HP
or
Suzuki Forenza @126HP

I suspect Suzuki might have exagerated to sell more cars!

Maybe it's not in the ECU? Perhaps they made some tinny changes...?

Well.... power numbers are a funny thing.... perhaps Suzuki tested their car in a wind tunnel blowing 45 degree air at 100mph into the engine while the Chevy guys did in the desert at 120 degrees without a fan.

Or perhaps Suzuki rated their power with 91 Octane and GM did theirs with 85 Octane.

I suspect they allways made the same power but GM de-rated their numbers to keep a bigger gap between the Optra and the Cobalt.

It's just like the SRT-4.... Chrysler rated it while submitting it to some insanely hot air.... so in the real world it makes 20hp or 30hp than it's rated for.

The key number is 101 horsepower at the wheels..... that's a dyno measured factory number for my Optra and I bet the Suzuki numbers would be identical.

I've seen a few suzuki forenza reviews saying it had 119. But yeah its probably nothing.


but why would a company test the car in hot climates for hp #s? wouldnt you want the highest # possible. . .

Not if your trying to market multiple vehicles in the same class.

I wouldn't be surprized if the Optra motor is under rated and the Cobalt engine is over rated to give them some separation.

They are really pushing the Cobalt.... I very rarely see an advertizement for the Optra.

They are marketing the Optra as an "economical" familly vehicle where as the Cobalt is marketed as the "fun to drive" sporty car.

If the Optra and Cobalt had the same performance numbers and similar accessories package there would be a conflict since the Optra sells for less money than the Cobalt.

The Daewoo Lacetti can be purchased with leather, GPS/DVD systems, Automatic climate control and a whole list of "expensive" add ons like wood trim and leather steering wheels.

We don't get them because it would throw the Optra into a totally different class above the Cobalt.

So...... it all comes down to marketing unfortunatly
