it is a fairly easy job to do and i think you can do it yourself... remember to clean every thing up before you install the new gasket.

Not yet Shaun but I'm still working on it. I'm getting a code P0342 which say's "Camshaft Position Sensor A-Bank circuit low input". I'm still trying to figure out what this means. I'm not sure if it means the sensor is bad or if whatever is supplying it voltage is bad. I've looked all through the manual and it doesn't have anything at all about a cam position sensor, only the crank position sensor. yeah the thing between the cam gears is the CMP... here is a pic of it compared to the one on an aveo.
chris from daewootech yahoo group is using the aveo one on his lanos, it worked fine so far.

Both of these sensors have been very problematic and there's even a safety recall for the cam positioning sensor due to some engine fires. If I were you I'd schedule an appointment with the dealer to have it replaced for free.

Well here's the latest. This has nothing to do with the poor running but it's something that had to be done. I replaced the timing belt, idler pulley, and tensioner and although a PITA it's all back together again.
Now for the running issue. The only two codes I get are still #4 cylinder misfire (it's intermittent), and the other was Cam Position Sensor low input. I got rid of the cam sensor issue by replacing the (CMP) sensor, but I still get a #4 misfire code and it's still intermittent. I replaced the plugs, plug wires, and swapped around the injectors and the misfire still only occurs in #4 cylinder and it's still an intermittent problem. My thought's now are focused on the coil sinced I ruled out compression, plugs, plug wires, and injectors. Any thoughts?
Remember, whatever this is, it only affects #4 cylinder.

swap the sockets on the coil for cylindes 1 and 4 and see the code again... that is swap the coil sockets A and B that are shown in the diagram here:

Hmmm, I completely forgot that this system fires two cylinders at the same time. Update: Well I swapped plug wires 1 & 4 at the coil and sure enough the problem went to #1 cylinder so this tells me I have a bad coil. I also did a fuel pump pressure test and it's extremely low. So now I have a fuel pump and coil on the way. I'll let you know the results after I install these new parts. Thanks again, Dan

Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? You may want to try to replace that first before replacing the pump.
Where did ya order the parts from? I usually go to www.gm-car-parts.com
They have good customer service and the prices aren't bad.

Everything's good now. I replaced the suspected bad coil and now she's hitting on all four. So now with all new belts, a fresh tune, new fuel pump and filter I'm looking to get a lot of good miles out of her. Thanks for all your help as well as the others who've chimed in on this topic.
