engine runs rough, poor accelleration
I don't know where else to post this so I thought i'd try it here.
I have a 99 Lanos and the engine sometimes run's rough at idle, but with a little throttle it smooths out real nice. Too much throttle and it act's like it's starving for fuel. When I drive it, it accellerates great as long as I ease the gas up to about 1/4 throttle, open it up any wider and it stumbles real bad and bogs down. It does have a CEL. I plan on taking it to AZ for a scan but can't get to it for a while since there aren't any AZ's real close. I was hoping someone here would have some ideas.

it's misfiring...
i had something similar happen not long ago...
take your cam cover off (4 allen bolts) and remove your plug wires... make sure there is no oil in the wire boots or down on top of the plugs, also check if there is oil or bubbles in your coolant. the oil and bubbles mean blown head gasket, the oil in the plugs means blown valve seal

well... oil doesn't conduct very well. to get it out, just clean the boots really good with a solvent (one that won't eat the rubber). try like mineral spirits or something like that. i would even think that something like dawn and water would be good, just make sure everything is good and dry before you replace them.
also... if you have oil on top of the plug, theoretically, you have it all in the threads and combustion chamber also...
take out the plugs and check em out... if they are covered in oil all the way around, you got a valve gasket issue (and a bad one at that). look in the plug hole at the top of the cylinder (use a flashlight)... theoretically, you just let a ton of oil down into the cylinder... replace the plugs (after cleaning them) and run the car for a few minutes (to burn the oil out)... then check the plugs again. if there is more oil sitting in the plug hole or if there is oil sitting on top of the piston... get the seal fixed.
i had oil in one of my cylinders that caused a misfire... cleaned it, and the oil has yet to return... i dunno what it was all about, but i'm not real worried about it.
check your oil level when done

yeah that is the valve cover gasket, once there is oil like that in the plug area, when u remove the plugs from the head, the oil will wet the plug, once there is oil down there, u need to replace the gasket, and put a little black silicone around the areas like the cams and where the distributor seal is ( the block off) What i did was to put a bead of silicone in the valve cover before I put in the new gasket, worked well. YOu need to make sure you clean the valve cover and the mating surface well, with a rag or something wihtout lint, and then take the rag and rap a screw driver with it and clean the plug area. don't use water or soap there, unless u have access to a blow gun to blow it out.

i didn't use silicon on my cam cover gasket and it works fine so far on my 1.5 SOHC... it is not a must to use silicon.

make sure if you use a liquid gasket that you use a lifetime gasket goo... one that will tolerate heat AND pressure. there is a good amount of pressure in that system...

oh! by the way... talked with a friend of mine today about the same problem... he said that you should be sure to check the plug tubes and the seals around them. they are notorious for leaking, on any engine like that 9with tubes). check of the oil is seeping in from the tube seals.

i tried that on my old gasket and it didn't work... the rubber was so stiff and lost its "leak proof" ability and eventually had to replace it.delphis wrote:well I will take it apart tonight when I go home and see if there just needs to be some tigheting or if I take it apart and clean everything and it still persists, then it will be time for the silicon.
if your gasket is stiff and lost its flexability just change it and save yourself the extra effort trying to make it work.

Any luck with this issue yet?
your gasket is gone, clean up all the oil mess including the spark plug holes and wires, replace the faulty gasket and check your engine oil level.delphis wrote: Well I cleaned off the entire engine about a month ago when I replaced my spark plugs and there was no oil anywhere on the engine, and now it is just seeping up and through, any suggestions?
