fixing my timing

Post by Lostinconformiti »

recently when my brother was driving my 1999 2.2L leganza the timing belt snapped. then he got it impounded and i had to pay to get it out becuase i love this car. this i know takes a long and complicated process to fix. i have the new belt and my uncle who is a mechanic helped me put it on (for a price that is) but after putting it on i knew it would know work but we tried it anyway. so now i am 80% positive that i must replace some valves in my cylinder head. but.. i think that there is a possiblity that it might be that we did not get the timing perfect or some other errornous problem. the reason is because we did have it running for a little but (put a haze of white smoke in my garage but it was running with the carb open that is) because we got it to run i now think it is some thing else. anybody got any ideas. plus i am hoping to do this without my uncles help (to show him im worthy of recieving his dale erhardt tool chest when he retires). and currently money is not a problem.

plus if anyone knows what size valves i need that would be helpful aswell so i can go buy them if i have to.

IF ANYONE HAS A REPAIR/SERVICE MANUAL FOR A LEGANZA 2.2L THAT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL (i couldnt find it at the local auto store)

THANK FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS. even though this is my first time posting here this forum is very helpful and i hope you guys can help. thanks again guys.
soon to have my daewoo back on the road.

i never ever seen a 2.2 but i think the timing is just as the other engines... make sure that the notch on both cam gears are facing each other and the notch on the crank gear is alligned with the plastic cover mark.

as for internal damage... in most cases the valves get bent due to a snapping timing belt, if you are not sure get a compression test for your engine before taring the engine apart just to make sure you got valves problems.

if you do have valves problems then check www.GM-carparts.com for whatever parts you might need.

ok as for the timing, there are two notches on teh cam gears, arrows, they point to nothces on the valve cover. they should be in the middle of every cam gear cover on teh valve cover, meaning that they should both be pointing up when the engine is at tdc (top dead center) there is a pointer that ligns up with the crankshaft pully notch when the engine is at tdc. LEt me suggest that u take the head off and take it to a machine shop, u probably do have bent valves, if there was white smoke, there are bent valves. YOu should also change the timing belt tensioner and the two idler pullies. I can send u a detailed description on how to do all the work from all data. ( which is a computer program) but again, get the head off and get the valves done. U can buy valves on ebay. They aren't that bad.

alright well my timing is correctly aligned so i believe that i have bent valves and will be taking the cylinder head off and taking it to a shop to have it rebuilt. (or just have my uncle help me for the $500 {thinks yikes}). if anyone knows the size of the intake and exhast valves that would be great (so i can go pick them up).

thanks
