Exhaust Heat Sheild

I just think it looks ugly.

any harm if i take it off?

it would hurt it a lot unless you have a CAI. b/c all that heat would go into your engine bay and be sucked in by your intake and you would lose a lot of power. physically i don't think it'll hurt anything though.

The extra heat won't be terribly harmful to performance or your engine, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect.

But I asure you, the rusted iron extractors underneath the heat shield are a lot uglier than the heat shield itself

Get it polished or painted with high temp ceramic paint or powdercoating.

well i remove the shield and polished the exhaust manifold.

i was goint to paint it with ceramic paint but didnt have the time and i didnt do it.

for me it looks better without the shield.

just get exhaust wrap and cover them up, and you'll have the benefits of the heat shield. I think i've seen it in black, silver and an off white.

And it would probably work better than the factory shield

Chris from Daewootech.net put heat wrap on his stock Lanos headers and the headers cracked! Would it be safe on our headers??? Or did Chris maybe wrap them wrong?

when the hell did that happen?? the last thing i recall is that Chris had a blowen head gasket and he replaced it himself... also during the process their was no wrapping around the header whatsoever.

the only way I can think of that happening with the wrap is if the headers are really really old, really rusted, and about to crack if not cracked already. I haven't heard of that happening from the wraps yet. A lot of people are using them now. Just remember, you get what you pay for, so don't go bying some nameless brand one on ebay cuz even though they say they withstand the heat and water, they may not. Check their specs. first.

Happend a long, long time ago. I think it was one of his first mods to his car. He bought new headers after they cracked on him. I just remember reading about on his Yahoo forum. Its a whole different time period from what you are thinking. I'll try to look for it tonight.

yeah I remember when this happened. However I believe this was more of a problem with the manifold than with him wrapping them. Myself and a few others had the manifold crack in the same exact place. Right between the #3 and #4 pipes.

There are no bolts near the location where all of ours cracked. It could have been just a bad batch of manifolds. I changed mine and haven't had any problems since.

It is actually very possible to get your manifold to crack from the header wrap. If you don't wrap it correctly, i.e. more than a .25 inch overlap, it has the possibility to overheat and warp and possibly ruin the header. I remember reading somewhere that a guy was in a race for an hour and when he finished and popped his hood, his headers were red hot and broken at the welds and the only thing holding them together was the header wrap. However, despite the danger, if wrapped correctly, they can look decent and work, just be careful.

A maybe better option would be to get custom headers ($300 maybe) and get them coated with ceramic coating called (I think) Jet Hot. It won't bust your header and has actually better insulating properties.
