Time for more SPL

Post by kinkyllama »

 Its time.. ive decided. I plan on ordering something in the next week hopfully.

But i want you guys to pick out what you would buy to give me more ideas... but with these guidlines. I want one 12" sub with around 300-400watts rms and a mono amp to power it. Im going to be using the best box possible for the setup probably gonna be ported, my dads friend used to make them for a living so he'll make it for free.

The main reason im capping the wattage at that beside price is currently i have one sub at 150rms (300peak) and its fine. But when i had both subs hooked up i had alot of problems (before i installed the cap). I plan on upgrading the ground wires also.

Anyways.. pick out what you would buy given this cap on wattage. In the car i mostly listen to hip-hop but i do listen to alot of metal and other fast music as well so i want it to be fast. Theres nothing like fast music with hard, fast hitting bass :D Also for the amp its nice to have a knob to be able to turn up the bass up front on only the subs b/c right now my h/u can only turn up the overall bass and my speakers cut out before the subs reached there full potential

I looovee my SPL

As always I'll direct you to Audiobahn.

They're good speakers that don't cost an arm & leg and produce pretty decent sound.

For SPL, Audiobland is good. SQ, they're still not wonderful (yes, I heard several more of the '05 models this weekend at an electronics/audio show and demo).

My suggestion, for excellent SQ and great SPL that will cost less $$ than the Audiobahn is the Adire Shiva 12" with the dual 4ohm coil.

For SPL, for a single 12" sub, it moves more air volume than just about any other 12" sub available on the market, even ones that cost twice as much.
For SQ, it has an almost flat, linear BL curve throughout it's full extension range.

Take a look at the Shiva 12D4:

It is only $179 + shipping (which isn't very much).
The new model is the Mark V.

One thing I really like is that the Shiva is very uninteresting looking.
This makes people think it is a lot less than it actually is and then REALLY surprzies them when they hear it and feel it.

Just so you can read something about it, here is the PDF tech sheet for the older Mark III:

Here is the DUMAX tech report sheet when the sub was tested:

Even just one of these will shake your car :)

i have a KICKER 12 L7 and that shakes my car to peices. if you ported that, it would sound mental. they are king for SPL, and are rather cheap, mine takes 750rms, but it sounded good with just 250. so anything more and you wont be disappointed.

heh my buddy is going to sell me 1 15" peavy blackwidow driver, which will handle 1400w peak and 700 rms, for only 200 bux with a custom box designed for my car! I can't wait to get this!

The box is designed for the car, but is the box designed for the subwoofer?
I don't just mean it hasa 15" hole that the sub will fit in, I mean is it specifically designed for the subwoofer's technical parameters? If it is not, then you will not get as much output from the subwoofer as you could.

Make sure it is 4 ohms and not 8 ohms. The majority of car amplifiers are made for 4, 2 or 1 ohm operation while most PA speakers are 8 ohm. Running an 8 ohm subwoofer on a 4 ohm amp will make the amp only produce about half the watage it is capable of at 4 ohms.

If you can specify which model black widow it is, this page: http://www.peavey.com/support/technotes ... kwidow.cfm has the technical specifications for building the proper box for it.

Cliff

P.S. The page says the subwoofer is 350watts RMS (continuous) and 700 program (peak), not 700 RMS and 1400 peak. Read near the bottom of the page.

I really wouldn't reccomend a PA speaker for a car.

I know plenty about speaker and speakers systems as I work at a Wireless mic company that also does small pa systems and also have a degree for sound engineering. :D I know that the speaker runs at 8 ohms, but I will just have to get an amp that will push it. The guy has the program that you punch in the specs of the speaker and then the dimensions of the trunk and car that you are going to put it in, then you tell it what you want either How Loud or How Low the sub will go. So yes the box will be built for both the sub and the car! The Speaker has actually been modded and dual coiled for more wattage handling. My buddy had it in his stratus and he didn't like it anymore, I think it is a pretty incredible deal for what I am getting with it.
