question about fiber glasshood
I want to make a evo 7 type fiberglass hood for my nubira. Why?
1- I like it.
2- weight lost 80lb + or -.
3- to keep the engine cooler.
4- Get a street racing look
5- be the only one.
Any how. Any one here have or have see one? + and - about it?

I don't know about the dimensions but i Know RRM makes an Evo 7 Hood for the Lancer Ralliart, it might be possible that it could fit.
I don't knwo the exact dimensions you're toying with tho....
I know Kia-fx.com has an Evo hood for the Sephia/Spectra....
It may be possible to use one of those instead of having to go custom.

You'd probably lose about 40 pounds. I wanted a carbon/fiber hood awhile back till i found out how little weight it lost...

if you are doing the hood mod for weight reduction purposes only, by all means do it yourself...
if you want the underside to look even half-way good... don't...
unless you autoclave carbon fiber, it is impossible to get a perfectly smooth finish on both sides, even with a gel coat. the underside of your hood would be all nasty lookin. also, the strength wouldn't be nearly as high if you did it yourself and you might have to go with additional layers of fiber... i know from expirience that a non-autoclaved piece of cf (3 laters thick) will still flex and bend under small loads (10-20lbs).
now... if someone wanted to use an aluminum or carbon honey-comb with carbon on both sides, i'd say you could get the weight down around 30 pounds and could sit an elephant on your hood... but that's expensive.
if you just want an evo hood cause it looks cool... look at the skeleton of the STOCK hood... there is a HUGE void right where that would be... just cut the hood and fold it yourself, much easier, a whole lot freakin cheaper, and functional.
i know where to get it done... but i want a polycarbonate hood (lexan)...
-my two cents

yes bring an Elephant to Puerto Rico is expensive.Audacityracing wrote:now... if someone wanted to use an aluminum or carbon honey-comb with carbon on both sides, i'd say you could get the weight down around 30 pounds and could sit an elephant on your hood... but that's expensive.
I want look, but I know if I change the hood for a FG hood I will also get a good lost weight. Maybe just make the holes will be better and cheaper.. Or reinforce the hood with some metal skeleton

WooHoo wrote:if you wanted to do carbon fiber.. its not as hard as you would think.. i have seen professionals do carbon fiber.. all you really need is some damn strong and heat resistant plastic bang/sheets and a super vacum and a really big oven// nothing out of hte ordenary though right??
you can get do it yourself vacuum kits from aircraft spruce ( http://www.aircraftspurce.com ) but it's hard to get the wrinkles out. to get smoothness on both sides it's best to use an autoclave to bake eveything together. to buy the vacuum kit, it's over 300 bucks plus the cost of materials. i really don't know that the weight reduction in the hood is worth the effort put into it. the is better weight loss in the removal of your un-needed ineterior parts. we have an autoclave here at school to do stuff, but one big enough for a hood would be quite expensive. again i say it... just cut your stock hood...
plus... who wantes to make the friggin mold for the hood?!?!?! the molds take longer than the parts cause they have to be perfectly smooth...
long and short... cf and fiberglass aren't worth it for a daewoo unfortunately
