2.0 Lanos ??

Post by wooskiMN »

What does one need to swap the lanos with a nubira motor....cost...parts...hours? Has anyone swapped the 2.0 and then turbocharged it?

The Nubira 2.0L swap isn't as easy as the Sunbird Turbo 2.0L Swap

The Nubira has an engine mount in the center of the timing belt where as the Sunbird 2.0L turbo (C20GET) has the mount in the exact same place as the Lanos.

Th Nubira engine still has the bolt pattern for the front engine mount but they bolted on the power steering pump and A/C on a bracket in that location.

If you went without power steering you could simply purchase an engine mount from a early nineties Pontiac Lemans 2.0L and then you could bolt in the Nubira engine

The Lanos chassis was based upon an Opel Astra/Pontaic Lemans/Daewoo Nexia and since our early nineties Lemans came with an option for a 2.0L 8V (cousing of the 16V Nubira engine) engine or 1.6L 8V engine (cousin of the current 1.6L 16V lanos engine)

So overall a 2.0L swap is easy mechanically.... existing mounting brackets are available and the tranny bolts up without issue.

The big cost if you aren't doing it yourself is the modification of the electrical system.

This would be a nightmare for someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

The C20GET engine management system is a very simple OBD I setup so it would be easier to integrate into the Lanos.

However there could be some issues if you have an automatic Lanos because the Lanos ECU would need to stay in place to run the automatic transmission.

I would stay away from a conversion into an automatic.... it could be very difficult.

WooHoo is thinking about a 2.0L Turbo swap and his car is an automatic so at some point he's going to come up here and Tom and I are going to help him with the swap.

I've been thinking about it and I think that the key to keeping the Lanos ECU happy is to simply "simulate" voltages to make the ECU happy.

The automatic tranny shifts off a number of different pieces of data such as the throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, RPM data but all of these can be "faked" by using sensor info from the C20GET (or atleast I think it should pose too much of a problem)

Hopefully I will get some time to make some "adapters" to make the swap easy..... but that might take me a year or two.
