exhaust popping sound

Post by kinkyllama »

Its never done it before... but after saturdays track event it started doing it. Usualy only when start from a dead stop. Im just woundering why its doing this b/c it never used to and ive had the muffler on there for like 5k miles now or more. The popping isnt loud but its noticable.

Any ideas?

maybe the popping is from a hole or a crack in the exhaust system.

as a fast way to know if you got a hole or a crack; block the exhaust tail pipe with a rag or so while the car is idling... if you got a hole you will hear the exhaust rushing out of it wish a big noise like... WOOSSSSHHHHHHHHH

Maybe since you added an intake system, it made more flow, and now your exhaust sound broke in even more and it's making a popping sound? Get us a sound sample.

It'd be too hard to get a sound sample.. even if i knew how to do it. lol.

Im just woundering. Im planning on redoing the exhaust anyways i just need to learn how to weld  haha.

Actually ill probably change this post into being about redoing my exhaust so i dont take up more stuff.

Im planning on doing a full 2.25 or 2.5 piping from the cat back and instead of going over the axle im going to go under it and have the muffler angle out

It can be running too rich and unburnt fuel is popping in the exhaust.

Since your engine is breathing better it may be running richer???

My car does it a bit but only inbetween gears and when sharply releasing the accelerator. Not concerned...

ubuyau - Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, that popping you hear between gears means you do not have enough back pressure and you could burn the exhaust valves.

Yeah, I do have an aftermarket exhaust but i have turbo so backpressure is not an issue :) It is only a tiny 2inch cat back with straight thru cannon muffler. Now i have a 2.5inch turbo down pipe and flex back to the OEM cat too.

Should be right i think...

my car pops, but thats because i have heaps of holes in my exhaust, ive had it fixed twice but the guys at carline are crap. Its only a 2' so there is no backpressure problem

well the normal popping went away for the most part. But today i gunned it for a green light, downshifted and hit the brakes to turn and BOOM... very very loud pop went out.

Do you guys think i should go with 2.25 or 2.5 exhaust piping? If i do 2.25 i can go with a muffler i like...
