OH CRAP!!! HELP HELP HELP!!!!!!
so... my friend and i were out in my lanos tonight just driving around. I newly installed a cone type filter yesterday and we were trying out the new sound it makes...
anyway... the cel came on. no big deal, right? we drove for oh... 45 more seconds... and WHAMO!!!! the engine started to sputter and bump and act all strange like. i immediately pulled over...
my first indication was to check the oil... looked fine. i tried to rationalize it real quick and thought... the cel is tripped by one of like 4 things.... air temp sensor (in my case a choco-chip), O2 sensor, cam position sensor, or the tps... i knew by the way the engine was sputtering that it wasn't an O2 sensor... so it had to be one of the other three...
that's when i found the most horrific thing in my life... i went looking for my choco chip and was horrified to find the wiring harness for it had gotten sucked into my intake pipe (through the hole where the sensor is supposed to go). i pulled the harness out only to find... MY CHOCO CHIP HAD BEEN SUCKED INTO MY MANIFOLD!!!!
holy crap... i'm taking the throttle, manifold, and head off tomorrow to look at the damage. i'm pretty sure that the choco chip got int my valves... and prolly bent them all up... oh lordy
anyone with extra valves laying around for the 1.6 lanos needs to pm me... anyone with advice or something to help me... post!!!
HELP ME!!!!!
***UPDATE***
since it's night and i can't see a whole lot with my crumby lamp... i decided to go ahead and take the exhaust manifold off... there is evidence of a viscous goo inside two of the pipes (not much mind you)... i think i found all the coating on the choco chip...

so sorry to here that bro... i got a question though: if you got a choco ship why did you insert it in the AIT port?? i think all you needed to do is place the chip in the AIT socket and keep the OEM sensor in its place, or at least that what i think you should have done as i never actually installed one on my car.
doesn't that choco ship consist of a simple resistor?? i guess if that's true then the engine damage is probably very little.... the damn thing will get crushed by a valve and the resedues will be sitting on top of one of the pistons... maybe the thing you saw in the exhaust manifold is just some remains of the chip that got spitted by the engine but still i think it won't cause much damage if the ship is just simply a risistor which i belive it is.

well... it was kinda just sitting close by... when i say the harness fot sucked in though, it got SUCKED in. The wires were pulled tight into the hole it was very strange...mmamdouh wrote:so sorry to here that bro... i got a question though: if you got a choco ship why did you insert it in the AIT port?? i think all you needed to do is place the chip in the AIT socket and keep the OEM sensor in its place, or at least that what i think you should have done as i never actually installed one on my car.

and my chip, anyway, looked like a contrusction staple that you twirled around in frosting (some kind of hard material to coat and protect it i assume)
so... who has a spare motor? 1.6 or better....
i'm going out now to take off the intake entirely and look at the valves.... wish me luck!

Wait a second, if you had an intake pipe with a filter at the end, then this is a closed system, there are no open holes for the wiring harness to get sucked into. That, and, the suction of our car is nowhere strong enough to suck in a wire harness and then rip the Chocolate Chip out, and even if it did, the resistor would be hard pressed to fly through all of the nooks and crannys and butterflys of the 1.6L manifold.
With that said, even if it did somehow get sucked into your engine, I doubt it will have a major impact, it is only a couple of resistors coated with some rubber. Maybe the rubber melted and is causing a valve to get stuck open or closed and thats why you are noticing the shudder, the other parts of the resistor are probabally already crushed and harmless, or maybe it is one little legs of the resistor that has stuck the valve closed.
Good Luck.

i just returned from the store and campus with 4 new spark plugs and a new air temp sensor. the ODBii scanner showed three things... high voltage from the temp signal (even with the stock sensor replacing the choco-chip), number 4 cylinder mis-fire, and errors across both O2 sensors (presumably from the mis-firing no 4 cylinder)... i hope this works
i got 4 denso iridium plugs though (that part makes me happy) for free cause my school has a deal with them. my school co-op's 70% of our engineering students to the denso plant here in tn. our fsae team (i'm the tech director for '06) uses them on all our motors and so does our mini-baja team
as for the task of taking off the manifold... i realized that i didn't have any gaskets to replace the ones i would be removing. i also started the car and got a listening scope and tried to listen... the valves seem to be ok (though damage may or may not have occured). i'm hoping the change of plugs and the new sensor with fix the issue.
this may sound dumb... but which cylinder is number 4? the one on the right or the one on the left (when looking at the engine)?

#4 cyl. is the first one at your right hand when you look at the engine.

i figured it out... it was the third from the left... the number 4 on the coil...
pulled off the wire and boot from the plug and oil went EVERYWHERE. pulled the plug out... covered in oil... couldn't ignite presumably
so... RECAP: what was thought to be the choco chip in the valvetrain somwhere has since been deemed to be an oil covered spark plug. indeed the choco chip is gone... replaced it with the temp sensor (and put the retaining clip on it). from the comments above, the guys at school, and a good friend of mine... if the choco chip got inside, it was probably munched up ebough that it didn't do any major damage...
i reset the ecu and everything seems back to normal... let's hope so anyway...

thats cyl. no 2... almost went each and every where trying to figure that out.
any ideas what caused the spark plug to be soaked in oil?? could be your cam cover gasket.

maybe our lefts and rights are mixed up...
but i have no idea why there was so much oil. there had to be 3 or 4 fluid ounces of oil in there (and then it all went into the cylinder when i pulled the plug out...
i'll take a post a pic of the plug difference here in a little while... we cleaned the plug off and proceeded to run the engine to burn the oil out. after 45 seconds of blue and black smoke, the cel went out and things seemed rather normal....

if that is the case on a 1.6 DOHC engine then your cam cover gasket is leaking oil... check the gasket and replace it and check engine oil and refill if needed.

it really would suprise me if that gasket was leaking....
my dad owned the car before i did and when he took it in for the sensor recall the took the cam cover off and used that gasket in a tube junk to replace the old one...
i'm thinking about going to the store tomorrow and getting a roll of gasket material and making one myself that actually works....
