Thermostat housing broke
Hey guys,
Well, today I was driving back home from playing tennis. I smelled this funny smell, but did not thing it was mine... so I kept driving. Later, I smelled it again and this time the smoke was coming from my hood. Also, my temp gauge was going up like crazy, I quickly pulled over and turned the car off (before the arrow got to 3/4 temp). Well my whole engine comparetment is wet, including my intake filter. The antifreeze is all gone. Turns out it's my thermostat housing that broke. I pulled on the rubber pipe and saw a thermostat inside. It is the 90 degree bent plastic/rubber part that has the thermostat inside part that broke.
Do you guys know where I can get it quick?... I'm going to a GM dealer tomorrow.
Igor

yeah... tell me about it...

you can't glue it with epoxy or anything, just replace the damn thing... only person that successsfuly glued it shoved some 4 nails on the lip of the housing for extra grip, no one knows for how long will it last.
if you can, get a metal one like this one...

Smoking came from antifreeze not the actual engine. I don't see how a flaw in my cooling system could affect my headgasket...KnightWalace wrote:dude.... get your headgasket checked... mine broke... had it replaced with a real sturdy one... then one day driving i smelled anti-freeze... opened my engine compartment... it was spewed everywhere... i didn't drive mine to the point of smoking.

Buy it Now!
If your engine overheats it could warp the head thus causing it to blow the headgasket. You wont know for sure until you change the T-stat housing.
This is true of almost every vehicle.

Well, I'm aware of that, but I did turn off the engine right away.daewooluvr wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 17780&rd=1

In the event of this happening to anyone else, you should turn the engine off but leave the key turned to accessories. I believe the fans will stay on longer if I remember correctly.AcingTeam wrote:Well, I'm aware of that, but I did turn off the engine right away.daewooluvr wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 17780&rd=1

The same thing happened to my father's Lanos.
I ordered the part from gm-car-parts and it was delivered in 3 days for $25 shipped.
The Aveo 1.6 thermostat should fit, shouldn't it?
My local Chevy dealer has them in stock for $17 and change each.
I have been thinking of keeping a spare thermostat in my Lanos along with the necessary tools to change it and a jug of water just in case this happens while I am driving.

good idea OZ... also keep antifreez to fill the system and appropriate tools for the job.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote: I have been thinking of keeping a spare thermostat in my Lanos along with the necessary tools to change it and a jug of water just in case this happens while I am driving.

I was thinking to carry just enough water so I could get the car home or to a store to buy antifreeze. If the engine won't over heat on a short drive, then that is all I need for an emergency.mmamdouh wrote:good idea OZ... also keep antifreez to fill the system and appropriate tools for the job.TheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote: I have been thinking of keeping a spare thermostat in my Lanos along with the necessary tools to change it and a jug of water just in case this happens while I am driving.
